I agree that the CA/Red Hook mix up subsequent confrontation probably could have been handled differently.
The rest of it seems pretty reasonable to me given the "if you take the car to St John, you're on your own" policy.
If they had openly advertised that renters were welcome to take the car to St John and there would be full support and customer service should there be a problem, I would feel differently. But that's not what they say.
With all that said, I am truly sorry that you had to deal with the vehicle issues on your vacation.
