Why is the deal with June travel?

Booked on USAir about 2 months ago for $388 including taxes. Going out of Hartford via Charlotte to St. Thomas. Today the fare for the same flight was $712.
Going down the beginning of August for 2 weeks. Glad that I listened to a little birdie who told me gas prices were predicted to soar.
