Spiders on STJ
Maybe you could ask if the villa has a bug sprayer come. We stayed at many places with small scorpions and only one large tarantula-looking spider. I was warned by many locals to NOT squish them as theymake a huge yellowish mess. (EWW!) But my parents have a bug guy come one a month and we have never had anything more than a few baby lizards in the house. I would say that I have seen 2 spiders and 4 scorpions in my 31 trips both inside and outside. I am more irked with the no-see-ums which like to gnaw all over me while the hubby ends up with only one mosquito bite the whole trip.
Good luck....you can do it!

Spiders, lizards, iquanas...it's wildlife and all a part of the experience, but I don't think spiders are exclusive to St. John!!! The ones we have seen, both inside and outside have been amazingly huge and colorful. Since 2/3 of the island is a natural setting and protected by the NPS so you're going to see lots of critters! Lots of info on flora and fauna at www.seestjohn.com . I sure wouldn't let the chance of a spider stop an amazing vacation!!!
On our family trip in 2008 our DIL was stung in the middle of the night. They searched the bed and never found anything. She determinded it must have been a stinging black ant.
Also, our 12 yr old grandson found a scorpion in the shower in the guest house, it scared him a little and he called up to the main house and asked what he should do. My husband said "give him some soap", but our son went down and dispatched it.
Everyone is so anxious and excited about our trip to STJ this year and not concerned about critters at all.
