question for st john repeaters
Agents and owners allow you to walk through a house if there are no guests there. We have done this when the owners themselves are there and graciously allowed us to come a take a peak. Usually we take a look on a turn-around day, after the previous guests have left and the new guests have not yet arrived. Sometimes it doesn't work out but on the whole we have had good luck finding turn-around time.

Sara- since i'm obsessed with St john I usually spend my free time researching difference places to stay waiting for the time to pass until I get back to St. John. when I find a place that looks like its for me, I call the owners or the rental agency and see if I can look at it while we are on the island. we usually go for about 2 weeks, so there is a good chance we can get in an see it while no one is there. Usually early Saturday, before the turnover. It really is worth your time to see it in person if you are seriously interested in renting it. I would hate to be disappointed. Usually the websites are pretty accurate, but I have seen a few villas I would not have been happy with.
Always different places, different parts of the island. Depends on what time of year (high season or not) and whether we want to walk to restaurants or eat at the house. We like different views and different size houses. Depends on the budget etc. For me, the search is half the fun, so I enjoy all the research.
You do have to do some advance research before you go if you want to check out another villa.
Usually I have a short list anyway from that years trip (ones that weren't available for my travel dates etc.) and I will try to track those down. Thanks to Sherban and others (if you know the island) you can usually find them.
Obviously working with a rental co is even better since they can meet you there.
Of course the best villa visit is when the owners are on island and invite you up to their place for a drink and a tour (Thank you Sunnyledge owners!!)
That way you have an enjoyable afternoon filled with fun conversation and an up close and personal view of the villa!

Great question and answers! Carol & I have been coming 22 years and try to stay at different places. Westin, Lindholm have been favorites but we check out the locations and rental deals more now. We're coming down Oct 26th thru Nov 15th (Serendip) and have a list of rentals to look at for near future trips. Once you get the feel of the Island, you pretty much know what suits your fancy and wallet.
On several occasions I have the blessing of being able to stay with friends or to dog sit, so that has made me pretty much despise villa searches. (I suppose that is code for lazy.) So now when I want to plan a group trip I call on the few villas I've actually seen in person and beg to rent them.
If someone else were planning, I'd be happy to try something new.
