I don't think a lot of people know to tip the boat crew. Had I not read it here, I wouldn't have known. And on my last boat trip no one else on the boat tipped. Not any of my travel companions (who had either paid in advance and not brought any money or brought just enough to cover their fare) or any of the other folks on the boat. I just don't think that's common knowledge.

So, that being said, I would hope that people who plan those boat trips make sure that the cost of the excursion covers making sure people get a fair wage.

For the most part, tips are subjective. No one should go into any job EXPECTING tips to supplement their incomes. Didn't we all learn that with those end-of-the-year bonuses that we used to get but have faded away with the bad economy? I think it is a little different with waitstaff since they have a different minimum wage, but I have never been an advocate of them making less than everyone else.

My Tip Schedule:

* 1st Drink @ Bar: $2
* 2nd Drink @ Bar: $1 (unless its complex order, then $2)
* Closing a tab: add $5 to aforementioned tips

* Dinner/food: 25% to 30%
* Boat trips or other water sport services: 25% to 30%

Working sucks... especially in vacation areas (which is where I am used to living in and working in) so make someones day while its in your budget to.

I just figure the cost of tips into the cost of items. I'd never eat a $150 dinner without having $40+ to tip with on top of it.
