hale lani, calicaribe, other villa rec
Have you looked at Blue Tang? There are only three or so steps to the pool deck from the main level:

Also, have you looked at Coyoba?

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
I love Hale Lani. My group was one of the first to stay there. The two upstairs masters are on pretty level ground and have great AC and awesome views and are equal in size. The only real difference is that one has an indoor shower AND an outdoor shower and the other bath only has an outdoor shower.
The views are to die for. It's not luxury, but I don't really need luxury. The drive to the villa is good. There are three steps down to the pool. There could be more space for lawn chairs on the pool deck, but I just got my sun at the beach and spent the evenings in the pool.
The downstairs bedrooms are not as great and lots of steps down to them, but it doesn't sound like you need them.
If you have any questions, let me know. I have some pictures from there somewhere around here...

as expected more great info.
second wind, love floor plan which is a lot like cloud 9 & other gifft hill govillas, but she's too far out for bride to even consider.
bongo bongo has great floor plan and enjoyed building blog. unfortunately her west view is now over pond bay and what a pock that is on choc hole.
blue tang is on list but believe both bedrooms are queens which bride doen't do unless she's in alone.
coyoba, looked at, love floor plan and if discounts hold would be doable. then i took closer looks at decore, quite gwady! maybe for a shorter stay. (hope owner doesn't read this but remember our decor is akin to early appalachan)
lulu, thanks so much for your info on hale lani, currently #1 on the list. we don't do luxury, afraid i'd mess up something. probably be sending you pm with some questions in a few weeks if she stays available and nothing better turns up.
again thanks everyone. once again our formites have done a wonderful job.

yogag,
seawatch lay out different, u shaped, from c9 which is straight across plus c9 has ac in great room. while seawatch is on suspect list she ranks low because of our desire to stay closer to cruz bay for ease of evening dining out for newbies. not an issue with only the bride, she prefers as i do dining & wining on the deck and watching sunsets and the "lightings of distant places across the water".
c&s, bongo bongo has great layout and meets all our needs but she has that unobstructed view over the pond bay construction site plus not available for early aug.
i have added to the list:
blue tang (thanks liamsant i thought she was 2 queens AND FOUND OUT THE NEWBIES ARE HAPPY WITH A QUEEN IF THE BEDROOM IS OTHERWISE NICEEE);
orchid hill (liamsant saw good review from you a couple yrs ago but a bad review from someone else for 1/10); sea grass (pricey but may get right with last minute discount sure is nice and great location); altagracia (same comments as sea g plus would require use of lower bedroom).
decided that maybe one of 2 bedrooms on upper or lower level ok but not preferred as long as br has good views & living and pool are basicly same level.
i know many find villa search frustrating, but i enjoy looking at the pictures and making lists of suspects and non-starters for future trips with different needs. as last minute bookers, we have to have a lot of possibilities to assure there's something acceptable at booking.
any more comments or suggestions folks?

I had forgotten about Orchid Hill! Who is repping it now? The company that managed it when we stayed there doesn't have it any longer and I could not find it on a google search.
If the issues discussed in that January review have been addressed, it would fit your requirements. The pool area is nice and I really liked the large deep hot tub that was attached to the pool. I would definitely check on the condition of the villa though....the outdoor room that the reviewer says was filled with rotted out furniture was all brand new stuff when we were there, and it was our favorite spot in the house!

I stayed in Blue Tang for 2 weeks in 2005 and really enjoyed it. The views and location were terrific. The driveway is a little steep, hence the name "Great Dammit Drive"! But still very manageable for this chick. The Twin/King bedroom has the better views, and the queen room has the better shower and bathroom. I believe the king bedroom's bathroom has been renovated in the last few years but still not as nicely laid out as the other. The decor is island casual. The kitchen is nice. The pool is a wally pool and the pool deck gets great breezes. If you'd like more Blue Tang info, ask away or pm me.
I've also stayed at Nautilus so we must have similar villa taste! To compare, Blue Tang gets better sunset views and more Cruz Bay action and you just might get to float a bit in that wally pool, Nautilus gets better breezes and cliff action- and the iguanas are pretty interesting, too~

thanks again everyone for the info. blue tang has moved up since has 1 king/twins & 1 queen which i've learned the newbie are accustomed to. seems like great location and she always gets great review. only neg is the wally pool.
lamsaunt i stumbled across orchid hill on tues, loved the layout, called the villa comp (seaview homes) and was told available for our dates. she moved to top of list but noticed next morning that no longer on list of villas handled by seaview. inquired and prompt response that the owner called about 4 hrs after my inquiry , had sold home in states and moving permsnently to stj. what a bummer.
while not west end we are looking at majestic ridge just past bordeaux overlook. that's a convenient location for the east end north shore beaches.
