Gromit:

I see you booked your trip from IAD for October or close to that time; I too am planning on going in October and find the fares really high. Where did you find your fares, if you don't mind me asking.

Congrats on your upcoming trip. It really sounds like an awesome way to relax and slow down a bit. Enjoy the planning and countdown. 22 for me and I am just about jumping out of my skin. Have fun!

Thanks guys!

@KMA27 My trip is for December. but I look at ALL the web sites and play around with dates and both IAD and DCA. sometimes you can get good fares from BWI but that's rare IMHO. And I generally factor in the cost of an overnight hotel stay which adds to the bottom line and often negates any cost savings on the ticket price.

Check orbitz, expedia, travelocity, kayak, American Express, and the individual airlines- my personal fave is AA vs. Delta. Also Tuesdays are usually the best days to purchase tix. I posted a link to an article explaining why on another thread.

just keep checking regularly and consistently. I also start by searching for just one ticket and not multiples.

My rule is anything under $300 -- buy immediately!

Under $400 - decent price, go for it if you're ready or nervous about prices going up. It's not worth stressing over.

for some reason the prices seem to dip 9 months out and then again at 6 months out, peaking just before they drop again. But 3 months out and closer it's a crapshoot IMHO. Obviously there are issues with airlines merging and fuel prices rising which will impact ticket prices. BUt there are algorithms out there
that track historic ticket prices and can give you some perspective but they are not any guarantee.

That's how I work it.
