I like how you think Lisa C.
I do without things so I can go on vacation. For one, I never eat out. I always bring my lunch. I buy what I need but I am not into granite counter tops either. I look at things like cars and say " I could have 5 or whatever number STJ vacations for that". But my husband says that a vacation is not something that you keep like a car. It is over. I "keep" the memories.

Anyway back to the topic. I make photo albums and scrapbooks and talk about my vacations. I do get the "must be nice" comments sometimes. I don't care. Some of my friends and relatives could afford to go if they wanted to, they just don't want to. Showing pictures and telling about it does not really make people I know want to go. But I took my mom to STJ and she really wants to go back and she gets it.
I write a short journal while I am there so I can remember. Then I use that to help write the trip report.

"But my husband says that a vacation is not something that you keep like a car."

A car has never taken my breath away like St Peters basilica or the first time I stepped out on the deck on ST John did.

My new roof (yes we had to do it- it was dripping in the house) never made me feel beautiful like I do halfway through a St John vacation glowing with suntan and natural highlights in my hair.

My new front stairs will never have an argument about crepes in French with me (grumpy crepe guy across from our hotel in Paris).

Vacations are experiences that expand your view of the world, enrich your being and make you appreciate what you do have at home even more.

Totally agree Lisa C. I am convincing my husband a little bit more lately about vacations, especially STJ.

I find myself explaining how inexpensive it is for me to go to STJ compared to other island vacations. The SOTB trips are a real bargain when you split a villa 9-10 ways. I especially find myself justifying this to my co-workers and employees. They love the pictures though.

When people ask me where I am going on vacation I say the beach and hope they don't ask anything else. I get sick of hearing "wow you must be rich". I feel like saying no, I choose to spend my money differently than you do. I know some of the people that say that make more than we do but they have the best and newest of everything. Possesion poor. Don't get me wrong, I like my things too but I have a small budget for them and pay cash.

The only people I share my vacation pictures with are friends that enjoy traveling too. I used to not have any St John pictures at work then I decided hell with them. I now have an 8 x 10 of me and my husband at the Trunk Bay overlook on my desk.

It's like I told my son when he was growing up, "it's all about choices". Of course he would roll his eyes when I said it

Didn't realize how common of a phenomenon the "must be nice" statement is. I too try to avoid telling people where I am going and just say "the beach" or better yet, nothing at all. I think next time someone says "must be nice," I will just reply, "yes, yes it is." Of course, that's if I know they are gainfully employed and are just being catty.

If only one of those people would ask me more details, I'd be happy to tell them how we save of FF miles each year to get tickets for free, hunt up and down for the best accommodation deals and both do side work to save a little extra cash for the trips. Plus, traveling during off season. Shoot, I could probably get them to St. John for less than their annual beach trip if they'd listen!

We didn't pull our girls out of school very often for vacations, but once in awhile when I found a good deal, they traveled with us. They were good students and I felt that traveling was part of one's education.

When I found fares from Denver to Hawaii for $169 r.t. per person, because of an airfare war...I didn't hold back. We all went and had a great time. The girls toured Pearl Harbor with us, and were with us for the drive the back way to Hana on Thanksgiving day. Gummy bears and fruit were our dinner that holiday.

I sold travel then. When a Caribbean Western cruise with outside balcony became available for the 4 of us for $3,000.00...I jumped all over it. The girls learned how to walk the streets of Jamaica and learned a great lesson.

I scrapbooked all of our vacations. I have no regrets.

Thanks for all the good comments toward the "must be nice" comments.
