I am staying at the Perfect Pineapple for two nights while on JVD. I wanted to be able to see a bit of Tortola, but I may not be able to due to the ferry schedule. It all depends on which flight back to Saint Louis I end up taking out of STT. I have to route through Tortola no matter what (unless you all have a better option), but I may only have an hour or so to kill...

Have a great day!

Greg and Olga run the Perfect Pineapple condos. This is a great place and you'll have a lot of fun. Greg is one of Foxy's sons by Gertrude of Gertrude's Beach Bar. The Perfect Pineapple is behind Gertrudes's place, up the hill a 2 minute walk. We stayed with Gertrude our last time on JVD. Olga is usually at Gertrude's working the crowd. It's a good scene with delightful people. I'd stay there in a heartbeat. You made a good choice. It's nice to wake up to a pristine beach.

If you've never stayed on JVD before you are in for a treat. Seddy and Racquel at the One Love Bar are great fun. Seddy is another one of Foxy's boys. The subject of paternity is not always a welcome topic.

Ivan's is just down the trail towards the East. It's a 2 minute walk across a decent path that finds you on another great beach. There is usually more going on at Ivan's at night.

Lodging on Tortola

Rick,

I am pumped to stay on JVD. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and from what I have read, its 'old school' Caribbean in that its not really developed/commercialized like some of the other islands.

So I was asking about Tortola and what to do in an hour. Now I am just considering extending my vacation one more day (depends on grad school schedule). But what the hell, if I am going to be down there, what is one more night's worth of expenses? So, I have done zero research on Tortola other than the ferry schedules. Any recommendations on where to stay?

We do stay on Tortola occasionally. It is not as beautiful as St. John nor as "old school" as JVD. If you want to spend day there Sebastians is a decent place to stay. It is walking distance to restaurants and Bomba Shack.

That being said, Tortola will be a bit of a shock to the system after your time on STJ and JVD. STT will seem really big. Given that, maybe hitting St. John on the way back from JVD might make sense? The Tamarind Court has cheap singles rooms.

On Tortola there are some things I DO love to do (requires car): Sage Mountain, Brewers Bay, Smugglers Cove to name a few. To be honest, you can get all of these experiences on St. John.

I wrote a short trip report on our last BVI island hopping trip. You can see that at http://www.garvin.us/STJ/Trip_Reports/2 ... pping.html.

The longest I could stay on Jost? It depends on the group. If it were just Christine (NoTanLines) and I, probably 2-3 weeks. But, I'd rent a boat and keep it nearby to pop over to Sopers Hole or Cane Garden Bay for provisions - really not much more expensive than a rental car. If it were our usual party group, a couple of them would start doing the chihuahua dance looking for more stimulation after 3 nights. My kids would last a week. Anegada is pretty much the same, just drivable, fewer bars and more discrete nekkid space.

Toilet flush problems? We did not see a problem any time we've been there. Some folks get freaked out about no TP in the toilet and only flushing for #2. I noticed the sign regarding this was down at Skinny Legs in November. To be honest, when we come back from the BVIs it takes me a couple of days to get used to flushing the toilets constantly.

We have not stayed in villas on Virgin Gorda. To be honest, it's a bit of a compromise for us: not as out of the way as JVD/Anegada, not as pretty as STJ, not as urban as Tortola/STT. We do daytrips from Tortola.

I'll be brewing a 22 gallon batch of Kellerbier this Saturday. My 150,000 BTU propane burner does a pretty good job of singing off my knuckle hairs every time I light it. With the proper stance I imagine I could avoid those annoying razor bumps and boil 25 gallons of hot malty sugary hoppy sticky Reinheitsgebot napalm.
