I can't say this emphatically enough: JEEP!

Over the past couple years we've been noticing an increase in mopeds on STJ and I think you've got to be apesh!t crazy to get on one of those things on the island. And this is coming from someone who has gone 165 MPH on a motorcycle before so it's not that I'm scared of anything on two wheels.

I guess I'm going to be somewhat of the devil's advocate here... My advice would be to rent a jeep... but rent a scooter for 4hrs one nice afternoon and go around the island on it....It's like controlling your own personal roller coaster ride! I'm an experienced rider and I found it challenging, so keep that in mind... however, it was one of my favorite days on the island, touring it on 2 wheels. Of course I also did it on one of the days that there were only 1 cruise ships in port and so I ran into very little traffic.

Dang Teresa, 165! I hit just under 150 on my Suzuki 1200 Bandit S and that about did it for me.

I guess I never really saw any groups on scooters in St. John. It would have to be more than those little 50cc jobs to make it up the hills. I would say a minimum of 125cc. My wife does not ride and will not get on the back, so I have never done it on St. John. I have on other islands like St. Barts and it was very fun. St. John's does not really have the roads for it. Like the others, I would not do it on St. John.

We have always rented a jeep on STJ. But last year rented a scooter on Tortola to tour ourselves for the day. Husband is an experieced motorcyclist. ONE place rents scooters, only One size of scooter. Once we were out of Roadtown, the scooter wouldn't make it up the taller hills without one of us getting off. Sometimes we both had to get off. Going downhill, the brakes would heat up then go out. And this was with us primarily using our gears. We complained when we finally got back and were told "oh yeah, thats how the scooters do here. They're, not big enough". Interesting that this wasn't mentioned before the rental. We laugh about it now, but at the time, we hadn't planned on walking the roads in Tortola.

When we were on island last January we saw a couple who had crashed on their moped, pretty cut up and looking miserable. I would rent a jeep. I know someones said rent a moped and enjoy a nice afternoon but tropical showers pop up quickly and you might get caught in one. Also the swtichbacks after Trunk and before Peter Bay are not moped friendly.

Yeah, I'm about as straight-laced as they come and that is by far the most dangerous thing I've ever done in my life. I was on the back of a Suzuki TL-R. The rush was insane.
