Bevm...did you see that Mel Gibson movie called "Signs"? That's the only reference to tin foil hats I know of. Other than that, I'm clueless too.

If we are going to penalize for size, then what about family history, etc....the list could go on forever.

The way I look at it is that they (overweight, unhealthy) do pay a price, they won't live as long. Charging them more wont make a difference. If they aren't willing or do not have the fortitude to make smarter choices to save their own life or improve their well-being, a few hundred dollars a year won't matter.

I bet if averaged over time it all washes out anyways.
The healthiest and oldest end up costing the system in other ways, like more Social Security and medicare paid out, more long term care, etc....And if it costs the system, it costs all of us.

Mr. B I am sorry for what you are going through and I truly do hope cures are on the way.

I don't think the government is witholding cures. If you want to talk dollars and cents, cancer is very expensive to treat and there are lots of cheaper ways to get rid of us.

Bev - my apologies...didn't mean to insult. Tin foil hat is is often used in reference to conspiracy theorists (similar to the "black helicopter"). When you mentioned disease being a means for the government to control population, I had to laugh. Not at the premise, because we know that governments around the world have gone to various lengths to control population.j

I have discussed with many people the writings of John Holdren, our new Science Czar. In the past, he has advocated putting sterilents in the drinking water without the public's knowledge as a way to control population and limit the "damage" we humans do to Earth.

Anyway, I have been accused of wearing a "tin foil hat" for thinking that Holdren may wish to employ some of those tactics now that he is in a position of power - with absolutely no congressional oversight.

And that is what I meant when I said that "usually I am the one accused of wearing a tin foil hat". I was being self-depricating.

So - absolutely no ill will meant towards you. I am sorry if it came off that way.

I am sorry to hear that you have cancer. I hope that you are able to fight and win this battle. Many are, many have and many are fighting to help you.

Please take some comfort to know that we are making great advances in the diagnosis, treatment and cure for some types of cancer. I find it amazing that I can even make that statement in my lifetime. A cure for some cancers. My mother was a survivor of breast cancer. My wife is a survivor of skin cancer. I have a BIL who is fighting colon cancer and has beaten the odds. That is the short list of only those in my immediate family who have this disease.

To those who believe that there is a cure and it is being withheld, WHY would anyone hold the cure? For research money? Sorry, the money paid to big pharma for cancer research is squat compared to what they would get for a cure. Do you really believe that the gov't or some all powerful entity would do this to control us? I don't understand that theory at all. Why try to control a dying population? Why are some cancers curable today if cures are being stiffled? In my work, I personally see where millions of dollars are spent searching for treatments and cures.

Sorry, there IS a cure for some cancers, no one is withholding a miracle cure for some nepharious cause, there was only one gunman and area 51 is a hangar not a wormhole to an alien universe.

MrB, good luck with your fight. God bless you and your family.

Go ahead and call me a flip flopper but I am in favor of Obama's health care plan. Think about this:

Obama plans on taxing the premiums of cadillac plans by 35%. If I understand this correctly then if I go out and get the best insurance I can afford I will have to pay a tax of 1/3 of the cost to help support his health care plan's costs.

Also, Obama says he is going to make sure that anyone can get insurance and cannot be turned down for pre-existing conditions--no matter how sick they are. Also, he will not let insurance providers drop anyone like they often do once they are sick.

So, I am not going to get that cadillac plan--yet. Nope, I am too smart for that. I am going to get the cheapest policy that I can with the highest deductible that I can. If I ever have problems then I will go get that cadillac policy. They can't refuse me, right? They can't drop me, right? So, why on earth would I ever go out and get insurance in case I need it?? I will just wait until I do need it (well, I hope to never need it but you get the point).

YIPPIE! I love this plan.

And sorry if this idea offends – it’s just the way my brain is wired from working in insurance and risk management for 25 yrs. End of possibly biased rant.
JMQ: while I really dislike the idea of the government getting any bigger I am inclined to support the junk food tax. I doubt if this will ever happen but if it did I would love to include all foods with high-fructose corn syrup.

MrB- Very sorry to hear such a cool dude as you has to fight the battle, best wishes to you.

Sorry to hear anyone has to fight the battle, of course!

My mother, father and brother are all survivors so there is hope!

Finding and eliminating root cause is almost always better than treating the symptoms, agreed.

However, some root cause analyses (RCAs) are very very difficult because of the multitude of variables involved...as is the case with human cancer.
Fight the good fight, keep spirits high...
Peace.

Traded in the old Toaster for a new one...shame it didn't qualify as a clunker, or I would have done it months ago.

Mr.B I am sorry to hear of your situation. I do not wish that battle on anyone and hope that someday there is something that can be done to help people in this situation.

I also was hit with bad news recently as my sister was diagnosed with lung cancer after going to see a doctor about what she thought might have been the flu coming on. The past few weeks or so have been hard on her and yesterday she had surgery to remove the lung. The doctors told her she was healthy enough to live on one lung and the cavity after the lung removal appeared to be cancer free.

To all of you out there that are fighting this battle, my prayers are with you.

Peace my friends!
