HUGE lines for the Car Ferry
I just found this article from the St John Source posted today... not great news.
Only One Boyson Barge Running Until End of Next Week
By Lynda Lohr
July 10, 2009 — Be prepared to wait when taking the barge between St. Thomas and St. John until July 18, Cheryl Boynes-Jackson of Boyson Inc. said Thursday.
"We only have the General II running," she said.
Boyson has two other barges but the Captain B is in dry dock in Puerto Rico and the AutoTransit is off getting an engine swap, she said.
Whether the third ferry that operates between St. Thomas and St. John, Global Marine Inc.'s Roanoke, is running remains unknown. Boynes-Jackson said early Thursday that the boat was out of service, but an unconfirmed report surfaced late Thursday on an Internet travel forum that the Roanoke had returned to St. John and was operating. Boynes-Jackson was out of the office late in the day and could not be reached for further information.
A working telephone number for Global Marine could not be located in the telephone book, directory assistance or on the Internet.
St. John Administrator Leona Smith said late Thursday that even if the Roanoke is running, drivers will face delays.
"Believe me, with only two barges running, the line is going to be long," she said.
The barge routes had a fourth barge, but Boynes-Jackson said that Love City Car Ferries' Captain Vic stopped operating more than a year ago. No one returned a phone call at Love City Car Ferries and the company's website said the barge was in dry dock.
With only the General II plying Pillsbury Sound since earlier this week, Boynes-Jackson said backups occurred. There are reports on Internet travel forums of waits of up to several hours.
However, Boynes-Jackson said the barge will run late to transport all the vehicles waiting for a ride so no one will be stranded.
"We worked until 10 last night and 10 the night before," she said.
Until all Boyson's barges are back in operation, Boynes-Jackson said the General II will leave Red Hook, St. Thomas at 5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.
The barge departs Cruz Bay at 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 6 p.m.
