Pickle me too on the marine bioligist. At least we get to do some awesome snorkeling in our adult life and pretend a little. Great pics, was nice of that Grey Angel to pose for ya.

Love the pix and need to get a camera for our trip next month to St. John.

I thought about getting a case for my Canon ($167) but saw your pix and comments and now thinking about that camera. I am used to Canons but that is a lot to spend and am worried about the fact that you have to recharge the batteries. How long did you go on one charge?

For those who are interested in the Canon D10,
I thought it took very good photos for a point-and-shoot camera. When the conditions underwater are ideal, photos came out as clear as these. They are NOT Photo-Shopped.

Of course, more often than not, photos don't come out like these, especially, if taken on overcast days, or in murky or deeper waters. Then you need some help from PhotoShop.

Thanks for the advice. I have a powershot A520 and SX100. I love to make pictures but am strictly an amateur! Actually like the A520 better as I can look through the viewfinder and save batteries. I have always just bought underwater film cameras (which never work) when we went on vacation and as we are headed to St. John next month (I HOPE ANYWAY

....still struggling over villas and then AIRFARE)! I MUST be able to take great photos in water. Also we do a lot of skiing and other stuff like that, it would be great not to worry so much about the camera.
I have been lurking for months while hubby asks the questions but had to comment on your great photos and ask about the camera. I have seen some cheaper underwater cameras but the canon seems to get the best reviews....and it is familiar. I still haven't maximized the potential of the ones I have...MUST THE READ BOOK or continue to bug people with my questions

which is much easier!!

Hi Pickle

I really wish there was some way to "sticky" your thread -- it's one of the best instructional sequences on the ID'ing STJ underwater life. I remember enjoying it when you first posted it and it took me forever to figure out how to find it again.

I'm going to pass it on over to the rest of my family so they can familiarize themselves -- our kids have never snorkled or been to STJ.

Thank you for sharing this in such a comprehensive way.

A favor: would you please link the rest of your posts in your first post, so we can easily navigate to the rest of 'em?

Newbie question here:

These photos look unbelievable. I am heading to the USVI for the first time in January. Is this camera one of those pieces of electronics you can pick up duty free down there? Looks like $280 is about what you would pay online however I really have no clear idea of how much a difference "duty free" is.

Besides your unrequited desire to be a marine biologist, how did you learn the names of so many of the more unusual creatures? Is there a good guide book worth bring along?

The sheer variety of what you've seen is inspiring!

Love your photos!!! I have been trying to decide between the Canon D10 and the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 for our first trip to STJ this summer and I believe your photos just made the decision for me!

Just love your photos. How do you remember all the names of what your looking at? I'm amazed at your knowledge. You do have a wonderful eye in
taking some very beautiful pics.

Glad you were able to work out of the current. Scary stuff.
