I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to find it almost unbearable to leave my dogs.sinawitatanka wrote:LOVE the Donkey Diner folks! They gave me some much needed time with their adorable puppy just when missing my dogs was becoming unbearable.

I love Donkey Diner too. The perfect island charm.
Where again is Sheila's Pot? I keep missing that one and it gets such great reviews.
I noticed that we got great, friendly service just about everywhere we went on island when we took the time to simply say "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" before we said anything else. It seemed like when we did this, the person I was talking to thought "OK, this person gets it" and great service always followed.
The best thing, though, is that I do it now everywhere I go and anytime I talk to customer service people on the phone back at home. I've found that people really do seem to respond in a more friendly manner.

Standouts from last week:
-Drew at Jewels in Mongoose. He helped me surprise Matt for his birthday by getting a watch he'd been drooling over for YEARS, letting me purchase it over the phone, going to buy wrapping paper to gift wrap it for me, letting me send a photo ahead so that he'd know us when we came in so that he could pull off the surprise, and giving an OSCAR WINNING PERFORMANCE when Matt dragged me into the store (as he does on every trip) to look at the watch.
-Ruth and Ron. Not only did we get a great visit with them, but she let me hold Wade the Shark. AND when I left my credit card at St. John Spice when I was drunk shopping one night, Ruth didn't immediately grab it and book a trip to Bora Bora.
-EVERYONE on Jost. Paradise Car Rental had a car waiting for us at the ferry even though they were closed that day. Gertrude's let us crash in their chairs for free and let us pour our own drinks at the bar for, like, $5. Mic at the Soggy Dollar helped me redeem some free drinks and leave some others (and is it just a product of too many painkillers causing hallucinations, or does he have the most beautiful teeth in the entire world?). The staff at Sidney's who showed me how to make a rum punch while calling me "Sweetie" the whole time.

Ruth of St. John Spice for chasing me down when I left my snorkel bag in her store.
Josh at Lion in Da Sun for our best day of vacation.
Joe of Joe's BBQ for giving my wife some advice on BBQ.
The check out girl at the starfish with the big ring on the chain around her neck. She always had a smile and was very friendly.
And as always thanks for the forumites with there infininte wisdom and knowledge.

I'm not just saying this because I consider her to be a friend and I know she will read this, but Ruth gets the vendor of the year award in my book. She should be the tourism ambassador AND give workshops on how to run a great business.
She is always there for me when I have stupid questions. When you buy something in her shop and send it home, it beats you there half the time (our stuff did last time; we saw Ron take it to the post office when we were walking to the Beach Bar one day). And she's even trying to locate a replacement lid for my pirate travel mug.
Slimman and his lady friend are awesome, and I love to park there not just for convenience but because I get to catch up with them for a few minutes.
Chad and Todd from Woody's are always super cool to me and one of them (Chad, I think) even found my sunglasses for me when I was drunk and they fell off my head. Not to mention that when I raved about their pasta salad they went in the kitchen and wrote the recipe down for me. They are definitely VIPs.
Doug at the Beach Bar is awesome and still makes the best lime and coconut in the Virgin Islands. If you don't like them, order one from him and you will change your tune.
And, of course, I have Jost Van Dyke VIPs. Ivan -- I cannot say enough wonderful things about him. The first time we went to Jost, it was off-season and we were hungry and just about everything was closed. Ivan and his daughter scrounged around until they found enough food to feed us. I could just sit and hang out with him all day long...
Also, Oliver and his taxi. I do feel a little bad about that group of frat boys that he kicked out of the truck, but it is super cool that he remembers us every year and drives us around.
There are so many awesome people on St. John. Frankly, there are so many great people that I've managed to forget most of the grumpy ones. I haven't had a bad run-in with a villa company yet, and I'd recommend both that we've used (Destination St. John and Private Homes for Private Vacations) to anyone who needs a place to stay. And, while we haven't checked in yet, Patrice at Samuels Cottages seems great. And some day I really am going to get to stay at Starlit Escape because Jared is great to work with too. The timing or group just never seems to work out for us!

We have to give a shout out to Captain Kevin of Double Header Charters for a superb day of off-shore fishing. My husband caught a white marlin. My son caught a huge shark and they both caught a boatload of blackfin and yellowfin tuna. Kevin was a superb captain and so was his mate (I forget his name, sorry!) Very professional.
Another shout out to Captain Brandi for a great and entertaining trip to the BVIs. Can't help but love his company.
Kudos to the Sunnyledge villa host Terry. She is a gem!
Great meals and service at both the Lime Inn and the Fish Trap
Lastly, to the taxi driver (again his name escapes me) who took us from the CA ferry dock to the airport. He was fantastic and because I liked the Jimmy Cliff music he was playing he gave me the CD!

Appreciation goes out to Cimmaron Property Management and their greeter Crystal for welcoming us to STJ and making sure we were settled in to our immaculate villa. For the surprise bag of goodies awaiting us, especially the rum and mixer. And for mailing the checkbook back to me that I had left at the villa.
To the group of people who dragged in our dinghy over and over again at Trunk Bay on May 22 as the sea kept trying to reclaim it, while we were cluelessly grabbing a bite to eat at the snack bar.
The kind, friendly, gracious folk far outweigh the grumps on STJ and hopefully it will stay that way.

Our atta'boys go to two companies:
Courtesy Car Rental came out to Cinnamon Bay to bring us a second key to our Jeep when I dropped it in the bay and didn't know where it was. Just as they arrived with the replacement key, Diana came up with the original key. They were very friendly and helpful.
Low Key took a couple of brand new inexperienced people and turned them into cerified open water divers in four days. They were extreamly patient with us. Although there wasn't sufficient time to turn us into "good" divers, they have a chance next week to try to accomplish that. (cue the Mission Impossible theme song)
