According to the Pennytalk website, you can use it with a cell phone but they state "You may incur airtime charges or additional charges depending on your cellular service plan. Consult your provider for details". The access number is an 877 number so I'm not sure about the charges. I'll give it a try when I'm down there this week and let you know how it goes.

As to the different answers from customer service at Verizon: I usually go by their website because that's what their reps always refer to, plus my experiences with Verizon on past trips to the island. I do believe that the roaming rates have gone up considerably.

Khud, I showed that pennytalk website to my husband and he thought it was such a good idea he signed me up. Let me know what you find out about the cell phone charges. I'd like to be able to use my phone on the beach. I think from the north shore, that might be BVI roaming charges which would be 15 cents a minute, which is till very cheap, but if there are other add on charges, I don't want any surprises. Our villa has a phone and I can call home from there.

Thanks for the idea. I would never have found that.

Two of the girls on our trip in November had Verizon, and they both incurred fees for using their phones, both for texting and calling. I had T-mobile and didn't have too much trouble on the AT&T towers, but neither of them would use their phones to talk because I think it was $1.99/minute. And I believe texts were 5 cents to receive and 50 cents to send. So, if we got separated from them we would text them. But everytime they got a forward or something stupid, I would just see dollar signs.

They had pretty good reception, but the charges seemed a bit steep. They also got the runaround and a different answer from every Verizon person, but that was what the final supervisor told them it was going to cost money-wise. She didn't budge when explained that it was the U.S. Because they wouldn't take calls, I have no idea how that affected their bills.
