Shoulder BIG problem

Post by STX lady »

I had been slated for surgery back in early 2003 (torn rota cuff, calcium deposits, & bone chips is what the MRI showed). We were leaving for Singapore for 3 months, so they didn't want to fix it before I left (healing takes 3 months). I left with 800MG doses of naproxin sodium (Hi-dose Aleve), it was great for the pain! When I returned I had to see a different surgeon, he said my shoulder had to be in it's best shape before surgery & sent me to therapy. At that point my arm would not lift above waist high or go around to my back at all. IN 12 weeks of therapy once a week, my shoulder is perfect, NO SURGERY!!!!! It's great still....GOOD LUCK!!

Whether one chooses traditional or alternative healing, best advice I can ever give is: No 2 docs are created equal. Meaning in any specialty, there are good ones and not so good ones. Do your homework, ask questions, but most of all go with gut feelings and real, genuine results. Your mind can play tricks for awhile and then you've got pain again, so be very sure about who you choose and their plan for your treatment.
I found a chiropractor recently that finally gave me freedom from pain, he knew his stuff. Also, yoga is wonderful for "undoing" all the repetitive stuff we all do far too much of...be well.

Rick I looked that up and it sounds very painful. I just couldn't imagine that "elbow" pain all the time.

I went to the doctors today. Last night was a horrible night.

After taking a percocet, I was done. I had to have Glenn take me up to bed. I just can't take those pain killers. I felt sick, I was out of it and I was out like a light.

Problem is, I was so out of it that I didn't take my nightly ativan that helps me sleeps and keeps those night sweats and terrible nightmares that I've had for about 4 years. I thought of getting up and taking one at 2:00 A.M., but I was scared about taking it after taking a percocet, so the night went on and on and on......

I went to the doctors, I guess, expecting other options. He told me that I have to to PT another 6 weeks. My range of motion is better then 2 1/2 weeks ago. I told him that my pain is no better, but he said that will subside in time.

He did give me a prescription of ultram, but that will probably never be touched.

I'm sure I'll be so tired around 10 tonight, that I'll be able to sleep.

I made it through work today. A long, long day.

I appreciate everybodies ideas and I'm going to look into them. I want to be able to fish this summer and enjoy it.

Thanks all!

Connie, My boss is going through the same thing as we speak. I am also having severe neck troubles (pinched nerve) which radiates down my arm. I am gettng some relief from traction, but my boss is only finding relief through the exact same manipulations you mentioned. Sadly I have to resort to the happy pills the doc gave me (Vicodin) for my neck, but I can't drink while using them, so while I am on vacation the Painkillers (drink) will have to do the trick. Not sure how well that speaks for my substance habits  , or if it helps you at all, But I do wish you the best and I hope you find the solution. Whatever you do, keep pushing for it, it's your health.

I went to a sports medicine doctor today and was told I have Shoulder Impingement Syndrome. He shot the shoulder with coricosteroid in 2 places of my shoulder. We leave for St John on Saturday and I needed some relief, when we return I have to start physical therapy, to see if it will help, otherwise surgery. Also heat cold and anti-inflammatory. I dont know how it is going to get better by physical therapy because he feels I am rubbing bone on bone and will physical therapy provide more/new fluid in my shoulder joints. I was so panicked when I saw the big shots that I forgot all the questions I was thinking about answering :( Has anyone else had this malady?
Thanks for posting this topic, I saw it on the side bar of the forum, I keep forgetting their is another forum here ;)

Betty, I hope you're feeling better.

I have had the same shots and although they didn't work for me this time on my right shoulder, I hope they have given you some relief.

PT does work, but it is painful and a long process. I'm sick of going to PT and the day after I'm very sore.

I think it is just a matter of time and work until you get some relief.

Wish you the best!

Sweet Connie-
I'm so sorry that you're going through such pain.
I don't do pills, either; like you said, they make me queasy.
Keep your chin up, girl!
Maybe all we need is some STJ sun on our shoulders.Living in the North East doesn't help with any internal tension...
Smiles-
Jimmy
