rRght up my alley!
Anyone who know's me on this forum know's this is my favorite topic.Look up my post called "Night Snorkeler"I think that's the name of the post.It was posted back in 2007.Big Maho was my favorite night snorkel. The East side {just below Maho Camps}is the easiest because you snorkel over sand and view the rocky reef to the right.I recomend that you know the layout of the reef before trying a night snorkel.Great fun and a bit scary, but that's part of the thrill!Parafins
HELLO FROM MICHIGAN...
For some reason the thought of entering the ocean at night scares the snot out of me.
Maybe this trip I'll at least try a quick dip off an easily accessed sandy beach, just for the experience.
Eeesh, looking over our balcony rail at the black black water at night when we cruised Alaska gave me a permanent case of the willies.

I tried it twice last summer with three of the guys in our group. At Maho, I chickened out because (even though it was a full moon there was alot of cloud cover) I didn't like the dioriented feeling of not knowing where shore was. I had forgotten the glow lights at the villa that night. I also did not like not being able to see ANYTHING that was not in my light. The light I had that night was crappy. I ended up swimming back to shore and sitting in the shallow water while the guys continued snorkeling and had a blast. The bugs did not bother me at all, but I was in the water.
The second time we did it at Hawksnest and I was better when we went around the point towards Gibney because the moon did keep it lit up, and I could see better. I also had a much better light and remembered the glow lights which made me feel so much more comfortable.
I didn't like snorkeling the reef in the middle of Hawksnest but mainly because I was unfamiliar with it. Wherever you opt to snorkel, I would suggest you be kind of familiar with the area you are gonna cover by snorkeling it during the day.
One of the things I was glad I had was a headlamp (waterproof up to 3 meters) that I used for walking from the car to the beach at Hawksnest because it was DARK in the woods between the parking lot and the car and the dive lights are the type that will melt if you use them out of the water for too long.
I plan to try again next trip but am okay with the fact that I may chicken out again too
One note, the guys saw lots of lobsters at night. I didn't, but they have pictures. I saw lots of little shrimp, a turtle and an eel.

Collette from 6-Paq Scuba took a group of us out in January for a night snorkel at Kiddell Bay She provided lights for everyone to use and farmer john wet suits. It was our first time and my husband wanted to try it with a guide first. It was fun and my husband got over his nervousness and we have since done it on our own at Scott Beach in Caneel. My husband bought me underwater flash lights for Christmas and they are by Princeton Tec, Collette said they were the best brand as they have a lifetime warranty. I cant say enough good things about Collette she is the best and super patient with newbies!
