On your iTunes preferences, you can select to manually manage your music. That way, when you connect the old iPod to the computer, they won't sync with each other. (I keep mine on manual because I don't always want the main library to sync with my iPod.)

Once your computer recognizes your old iPod, you should be able to use iPodRip to import music from the old iPod into your main library.
