Don't get me wrong, I looove king cake. It's just that when I have served it over the years most people say "wow, that's sweet!"

No shit, that granulated stuff is sugar!

Thanks everybody! In between meetings today

I ordered a King Cake from Haydels -- filled with cream cheese. At first I thought sheesh - $61 (inc. shipping) for a cake for 8 of us! But I realized there would be some left over for the family on Mardi Gras, and if we were eating in a restaurant we'd pay alot more. Plus it frees up some time for important things like making this drink you recommend! I'll let you know if DH or I get the baby!

You all are great. It was fun getting your recommendations!

You must have paid the extra for a Saturday delivery. It comes with more than just the king cake.

First piece had a little pink girl in there. Luck lucky. Even better, I had a second piece of cake. Pretty darn tasty. Whoever said coffee cake texture had it right, it was braided. Yum!

Rick honey - too bad you weren't here for the crawfish I had earlier. I thought of you when they came to the table! I had to suck the heads and pinch the tails all by myself

King cake would have been a nice desert to cool the spices.

He did get the baby, but I'm not sure it was a girl. I'm not sure it was a boy either.

It was a breech birth. He jabbed his fork into the cake and there were two feet sticking out.

Ummm, more King Cake tonight!

This is sort of off topic of the off topic but did anyone catch Top Chef semi-final in New Orleans last night with Emeril? Oh that looked like some good food. I'd like to try Carla's Oyster Stew.

The King Cake was yummy!

We had a blast last night (OK, into this morning) with our pre-Mardi Gras fun. We had shrimp, gumbo, corn bread, maque choux, coffee with chickory, and milk punch (that stuff will knock you on your tail!) and a bunch of other stuff I can't really remember. (Too much wine!)

The King Cake made it here by late morning. I was a bit alarmed when the UPS guy held the box vertically, like you'd hold a book, instead of flat like a pizza. But the cake was fine and it was very tasty. At first no one got the baby, so we dealt cards and high card got the lovely (pink plastic) tiara I bought for the occassion. Then later DH grabbed another piece and found the baby. Now the joke is that we're expecting.

Hmmmm I haven't been to nawlins for years...maybe 6 or 7...and this is all bring back memories.

My favorite from NO is a Muffaletta from the Italian bakery down by the french market...talk about addicting!

I'm thinking a trip to NO in 2010 is a good idea...

It's so funny, when I first moved to Atlanta in late 1988 the only thing "local" I could find is Tabasco and you had to know where to look.

My family had to send me care packages!

Today I can get EVERYTHING locally, right down to authentic Muffelatas & PoBoys!

I even saw Tony Chachere's in a dual language label in Canada while vacationing

Atlanta has celebrated a small Mardi Gras for about 12 years or longer also.

Anyway, Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

Yep, Central Grocery sounds like it could be the one...someone tuned me on to this place way back when and now it's a guranteed stop each trip...sometimes more than once. It is every bit as important as Cafe DuMonde to me...
