With all due respect however SJ
you have just stated the premise for Roe v. Wade... there is an implied right of privacy built into the Constitution. Your argument in support of denying the right to choose is actually the basis of the right to choose.
This is a debate which keeps constitutional theorists in business, ie., does the meaning of the constitution change as society changes or is it a static document.

I learned a long time ago to not discuss politics, sex or religion at work. After reading this thread I've learned not to discuss it on a forum either!

You've mentioned one of the reasons why I feel that I could never make this decision for someone else (and why I don't want some suit in Washington to make the decision for me or my daughter.) If someone wants to legislate what I can do with my reproductive organs, then let's legislate what men can do with theirs. Make it illegal to have sex with anyone until you're ready to physically, emotionally, and monetarily support that person's child. Hmmm... would that have changed your dating years?

I know I can stop reading it, which I have for the most part, but I am a peacekeeper type, and I hate that this is going on.

I 100% support anyone's right to believe whatever they want to believe. I understand that our most closely held beliefs are often very deeply rooted in personal upbringing or experience. My inherent problem is when the government tries to legislate something that is intensely personal.

Beyond that I have a major problem with hypocrisy. Believe whatever you want to believe but apply the principles consistently. If you believe life is sacred, than all life should be sacred. Not just the lives of unborn babies.

I have no illusion that I will sway anyone's firmly entrenched position. The intent of my first post on the topic was in direct response to a common and ugly misconception that I, personally, for better or worse could not let slide.

My only hope was to give a voice to the real people who are faced with the decision. To encourage people to step away from the gross generalizations that are often made to dehumanize the very real women faced with these decisions.

Hey everyone - do we need to close this topic? I don't want to zap it - but we could just make it read only. I really don't want people to get upset by visiting this place - that is for sure.

Anyway - the little poll here is pretty close actually to the latest national tracking polls:

I am a little surprised - I thought the simple majority here was a little more republican/conservative (and maybe they are but just not voting that way this time around for whatever reason). But we only have about 80 responses out of 1,700+ users so I guess the margin of error (I am not good at math) could be fairly large -

I'm going to print out your response, it was the most moving and intelligent response I have ever read about this topic. I usually do not talk about my politics. I get asked all the time because I am on Capitol Hill working as a photographer. I will always vote Democrat until abortion is not an issue with the Republican party. Good for you for standing up and speaking out! I did not know your story about your son, thankfully he is alright but the choices are yours to make not lawmakers on Capitol Hill. This is not about religion, it is about the health and safty of women.

Pull the plug. This has morphed into a political discourse between 5 people.

I repeat: Study the candidates positions, not the talking heads. VOTE!

DCPhoto - Thank you. I know there is a lot of talk about ending this thread and that is fine. Perhaps nothing will be resolved or accomplished here, but I do think talking about it -- politics and religion -- when done with respect can do a lot more to reach a middle ground than pretending like these issues and differences don't exist.
