All our lives we've lived through the Emergency Broadcast System telling us "This is a test. This is only a test. In the case of a real emergency, you will told where to tune".
Well, hell! I was about 2 1/2 miles from the Pentagon when it was attacked. Nobody on the freakin' radio told us where to tune. Was that not a "real emergency?"
I was in old town Alexandria at work that morning when I heard the news about the twin towers (via instant messaging from my husband). We were just all in stunned silence. Then we heard about the pentagon, I could see the smoke from my window. We were directly in the flight pattern from National airport. It was not a comforting feeling. I looked down on Duke Street and it was a parking lot. Most of us decided to stay at work. There was no sense getting in the mess. I left later in the afternoon and my normal 30 minute commute took about an hour. I had many friends in DC who had to walk out of the city. It was a crazy day, I hope not to ever see repeated.
