Anyone recommend fishing?

Post by kellyanna »

Hi, I'm new to the forum! We're going to St. John May 5 - 12 with wontongirl! We can't wait.

My husband was wondering if anyone recommended any fishing trips (deep sea or other) while we were there. Just inquiring.

Thank you!

No I wouldn't plan on fishing. There are so many other things to do there. Here are the rules I follow:

Bandit's "Don't Rules" for St. John
1. I don't do any activities there that I can do at home. I relax, read a book or magazine, and listen to the island.

2. I don't stay at a resort. Sorry, but well, anyway just sorry.

3. I don't buy bottled water. I need to build up immunities so I drink Rum.

4. I don't drive on the right. It's those Water Trucks that alarm me.

5. I don't feed the donkeys or the goats. They will follow you home.

6. I never forget to remind my entourage to wear something over their swimsuits while in Cruz Bay.

7. I never take any long pants of any sort and I won't go anywhere on vacation that I must.

8. I don't take any socks at all. Leave them at home but if you bring any, make sure they aren't black. Any black clothes there just look out-of-place.

9. I don't inhale at Foxy's. I really don't.

10. I don't act like a tight-wad. I tip for my luggage to be tagged and carried to the ferry, I tip everyone that touches my luggage even though I don't like to, and I try my best to act like I'm on vacation. It's a few extra dollars to me but it's their livelihood.

Great list, Bandit!

I'd love to go fishing while on St. John (deep sea or inshore), but I would be going alone, so the cost is prohibitive. Does anyone know if any of the charter captains do shared boats? If I could share the cost between a few others I could probably swing it.

Kellyanna... There are some links to fishing charters on this site (Up above, under trip planning and then things to do) or there are some here.

Time to start working on convincing the wife that we have to go back soon!

Thank you so much! Bandit, love your answer! Ron, looked at the sites you suggested. The link was very helpful. There is much to consider. I wouldn't want to be the only one going fishing either.

Haven't been able to make any definite plans yet. Lots of "things" are up in the air...like contracts, obligations, special projects, schedules, and trying to figure out when the Wisconsin Milkers are gonna be there. Not sure I wanna be there when they are there; the way they been treatin' me lately.

Mostly though it depends on ..... ....... well I can't really say right now.

Hey is your sister named twotongirl??? I beet she's a h o t t i e!

Loren sold that business to Jay. We fished with Loren a few times and also with Jay, did well everytime. Doubleheader is on St Thomas but they will pick people up on St John. I believe they both have web sites, just do a search.

I remember Loren getting us into a nice school of blackfin tuna and we went nuts for about 45 minutes. Jay taught me how to quarter the horizon while he helped others in the party. Good people and great fun.

Loren talked of moving back to the States, but at the same time was building a nice house over by Great Cruz Bay. I saw several articles writted about Loren in fishing mags and he would alway be good for a strory or two about some celebs or politician he had taken out.
We had a "killer" day of fishing yellow fin tuna with Jay. It went on for hours and it was the best day of fishing for me and my husband ever.
Loren has LOTS of stories, he was a lot of fun to fish with.
We saw him last in June 06 still building houses, he was with the owner of The Lime Inn, a good friend of his.

Anthony had posted this awhile back and I had cut & paste into my notes. We will be on-island the same time May 5 – 20 and I wanted to doing some fishing. As time gets near, keep in touch with me and we’ll see if we all can charter a boat. Anyway, here’s the info I saved.

Deep Sea Fishing
Anthony

always recommend my good friend and former neighbor Captain Jonathan of Doubleheader. They run out of Sapphire Beach but will come and pick you up I am sure. Check their website and give them a call.

BTW - if you want to keep all the fish, I am pretty sure you will have to pay extra. I think the deal is usually you get enough for a meal, but the captain gets the fish - I think they all run it that way - so inquire ahead.
