Savannah and Charleston Help
Looking for ideas for an upcoming trip to the two cities. We have never been to either and are very much looking to get the city fix after being in St John all
year. Food is a big thing but any "must do or see" would be welcome. We are staying in the Historic District in Savannah and on the Isle of Palms in the Charleston area. The trip is the first two weeks in September and I was wondering how steamy the air will be.
Hope all you travelers can help an Island Girl out with
some city ideas.

Lucky you, Charleston/Savannah are 2 of my favorite places in the US. I lived in Charleston for 3 years, and absolutely loved it. It will be pretty warm & humid, but it's the south in September, ya know?
If you're staying on the Isle of Palms, there are a couple of restaurants I would suggest. For casual, Coconut Joes is right on the beach and one of my favorites. Good food, drinks, and great atmosphere...they have a rooftop deck, and have live music sometimes. For moderate/upscale, try The Boathouse on Sullivans Island. Only a couple of miles from IOP. Great restaurant on the waterway - get there early and have a drink in the crows nest bar, great spot for sunsets. Locals will tell you that The Boathouse has some of the best (and freshest) seafood in Charleston.
Even though they are super-touristy, I would recommend a carriage tour downtown. You really learn a lot about the history of Charleston, and get to see some of the beautiful side streets that are off the beaten path.

I'm not much help except to say that I loved Charleston. I've only been there once; my husband quite a few times (golf). He wants to move there when we are a bit older!
We went there for Thanksgiving a couple of years ago--on a whim, to do something different. We went with our daughter, our daughter's godparents, their son, and the godmother's sister and sister's husband. Oh, and our Yorkie. Charleston Place, the hotel, is pup-friendly!
I NEVER expected that our Thanksgiving meal would be anything but mediocre but it was actually very very good. I liked Charleston Place. We also ate at some other good places. I forget the names, but the Zagat reviews were helpful to me at the time, and were right-on in helping me choose.
I agree with the tourist Carriage Ride thing... it's touristy but a great way to see everything!
Do NOT read "Ghosts of Charleston," which I picked up in the hotel gift shop, unless you want to be truly spooked, but if you do, there's some kind of ghost tour you can do.

Hi Pat. We love Charleston and vacationed there often until we found STJ. Two of our favorite restaurants are Gilligan's and Magnolias. Gilligans if very casual but has good food and lots of it. Magnolias is more upscale but not too stuffy. Their food is very good and it's located in downtown Charleston. Here are their websites if you want to take a look.

We've eaten a Hyman's a few times, and it's hit and miss depending on what you order. But, they have a great raw bar with big yummy oysters.

Walking downtown and taking a carriage ride are fun. There's lots to see. When our daughter was much younger we did the walking ghost tour. She was so scared we had to leave in the middle of it.
