Bad Maine House Rental

Post by Steve S »

Just got back form a very disappointing trip to York Maine. Rented from an individual from a neighboorhood near my house. His home was nicely kept when I met him in person.

We get to the place on the shore and yes it is on the ocean with a lovely few, but the only working entrance was through a grungy garage with smelly trash. Next we stepped into the house and I have never seen a more soiled carpet (except maybe in a fraternity house) the walls were dirty; scary in the kitchen. Linoleum was peeling up in the kitchen and the full bath upstairs was (yuck) carpeted and wet. Deserving or not the couches in the living room gave us the "skeebies" and we dared not sit down.

We called the owner to tell him we just couldn't stay there - he didn't get it.. "Didn't the people ahead vacuum and mop?"

My wife and daughters were pretty upset. I was ready to turn around and drive the 6 hours back home. We ended renting a very nice (and clean) efficiency for a shorter stay.

We are still wrestling the money issue. I was willing to forfeit the $200 deposit, he feels generous by splitting with me the $1000 for 4 nights. ($500 for no services rendered!)

No more renting places we haven't walked through!

wow that's a shame. is it on the stretch of road that looks right out to the beach? what is that, Long Beach there or something?

Honestly I always got a Jersey shore vibe there and that's not necessarily a compliment in this scenario!

Carpeted bathroom??? AAAGHH!!

I personally would not even let him keep the deposit. Yuck!

Yuck! That sounds really bad. I'd have probably been in tears. Hope you get a full refund.

Oh, I really feel for you.

We had something similar happen to us in the Finger Lakes (OMG, the grossness) and in FL (more trashy dirty like old cig burns on the furniture and badspreads).

There is nothing worse than "creepy" dirt like scummy carpeting and furniture. Yikes!

Did you take pictures? I would have but then again, if it is someone you know and see regularly, that could get touchy.

Any good sites or forums dealing with what to do when a rental turns out bad?

I'd try to get all my money back and here is how. You mentioned that he lived in your neighborhood. I would guess that he lives in the same county. Out here in California and that was the case, I would send him a demand letter for the entire amount. If he didn't pay, I'd file a small claim court action against him and get him into court and try to get a judgement. Collecting is another issue, but might be easy if he has a home and is lienable (sic)

A few years ago I remember hearing about a guy in San Francisco who sued in small claims court for a cleaning deposit when he moved out of an apartment. By the end of the story, he owned the entire apartment building. It's something to think about, that's for sure!

Actually, I'm a little big offended by the Jersey shore vibe. We have a condo down there and I don't understand what you mean by that.

yup sure am from Jersey and have been in many a shore town where things aren't kept up as they should be. if you have ever been to York, Maine you could see any easy comparison between the two.
just an opinion. I wasn't condemning your condo. I'm sure it's lovely.

Can't happen in CA small claims court. All he would have gotten back is his cleaning deposit.
