Hi All! Back from the Big Island, Hawaii

Post by NoWorriesMom »

We had such a great trip, had to share. 14 days on the Big Island, one week on each side. Friends asked why we would want to spend time on the "rainy" side, but we had great weather the whole time. The snorkeling was amazing, visibility incredible and healthy coral as far as the eye could see. We loved a place on the Kona side called Two Step. There is no beach, just black lava rock, and two steps in the rock down into amazing and beautiful water. Lots of fish and turtles and really long trumpet fish.

Highlights of the trip: We did some cliff jumping. Thirty foot drop into a little cove of clear crazy blue water. Another day we splashed about in a waterfall and used a rope swing to drop into the mouth of a river at a cool park where the ocean crashes inland and make the freshwater river fun with waves.
Boogie boarding was great with our boys. Also incredible was the Botanical Garden, where a mango tree tried to kill me. We saw the volcano crater spewing out steam, other gases, and particulates like, gulp, glass. Another night we saw red hot lava glowing and that is just surreal.

We 4 wheeled to a secluded and gorgeous beach called Makalawena. Had the beach with its perfect white sand, interesting little coves, and turtles in clear water all to ourselves for much of the afternoon. Did some diving too. There was just so much to do that I'm not yearning for a trip to St. John. Give me a week, or a day or two right! If you have any q's about the Big Island ask away! Happy 4th!
