A cheap place to stay

Post by zen_fire »

Hi, I am planning to visit St. Thomas in the first semester of 2007. Most likely in the low season (When is the low season there by the way?).
A decisive issue is to find a affordable place to stay. I am going with my wife. A rate of below US$ 50 for a couple is what we are looking for.

Do anybody have the contact for places with that kind of price?

We wouldn't mind staying in separated rooms in a hostel, for example. But staying in the same room would be ideal.

Thank you guys for any information you provide,

Alex

I think you may have posted this on another forum and I am quite sure that your answers will be the same here.
St John is very small and accomodations that are inexpensive are few and far between. There are no hostels. There are campgrounds, small inns, resorts and villas.
The cheapest per night place that I found was $27 a night for a bare campsite. You bring your own tent. I believe that Maho bay has tent cottages for around $75 in the off season and you can probably camp at Cinammon bay in one of their tents for between $60 and $70 a night.
When making a budget for a St John trip, remember that you have to fly into St Thomas, take a taxi to the ferry dock and then ferry over to St John. You will need to pay for transportation on island, either renting a car ir taking taxi's. The island is very hilly so bike riding is out and walking is more like mountain climbing in some spots, although you may have luck with hitchhiking.
Food can also be pricey, St John is hardly a $40 dollar a day destination. (although I am sure it can be done, but not very easily)
I hope that I don't sound discouraging, you can stay on STJ on a budget, but it is not a chep destination. Also remember, that when prices are lowest (Aug and Sept) it is hurricane season and many places are closed.

Not St. John, St. Thomas

Post by zen_fire »

I am not going to St. John. I am going to St. Thomas.

But, thank you for the information about St. John anyway. I'll keep it in mind if I go to St. John someday.

I just did a quick search and I can not find anything for less than $75.00 a night.

Many of the things said about St John are true for St Thomas. You will need to factor in transportation costs and food costs. Off Season in St Thomas is not as much of a ghost town as St John, but places do close as well. You do have the benefit of more shopping options on STT. There is a Kmart and a Cost-u-less (like BJ's or Sams) that can help you save money.

I would recommend doing a search on St Thomas accomodations and see what you come up with.
Many folks on this forum are ST John villa junkies, but I know many have stayed at the Crystal Palace on STT, though out of your price range, it is very nice.

Good Luck

Here is a link to two of the cheapest places I've found. I've never stayed in either. Good luck!

It's unbelievable.

It's unbelievable that St. Thomas is that expensive to stay even in the off season. It looks like the hotel owners prefer to make no money than to make U$50.00. I'll kep looking.

Thank you very much to the ones who answered my post.
