I agree that the passport is much easier and I always travel with mine :)

If you are a US resident you should not need a passport for travel to and from the USVI. Your expired passport may be a help though. Birth certificate (with raised seal), drivers license or other government issued id with photo will also be of help. AA did check my passport last trip and commented that my ticketed name did not match my passport name. So I got a tsk tsk for using Tim instead of Timothy and told that soon that would cause problems in the near future.
