Update As if the last day isn't sad enough...

Post by brenda »

Well, we are home. I was having a lot of difficulty posting from Gallow's Point. I would type out the whole message and it would get lost in cyberspace.

On our last day, I got an ominous message from my mother-in-law to call home right away. We have three cats and always have a relative stay at our house to watch them. Our oldest was geriatric (18 years old!!). Although very skinny for quite a long time, she was feisty and fine when we left but apparently her time was up. She went downhill quickly and she had to be put to sleep on Friday, our last day on the island  . She was jaundiced and the vet thought she might have a liver tumor. She will be missed. They so become part of the family.

The other upsetting part that I found out tonight was that apparently she wasn't doing well for a couple of days before the cat sitter actively pursued getting a hold of my mother-in-law to handle things. She definitely knows better than that. Since it's family, I can't really say too much, but perhaps some suffering could have been prevented. I just have to try not to dwell on it. Thanks for listening!

Brenda, we had to put our cat, Bob, to sleep a few weeks ago and whatever the circumstances it's never easy. I know what you mean about avoiding unnecessary suffering and that maybe your sitter didn't act quickly enough, but don't dwell on that. Just be happy that your kitty is up in heaven playing with Bob and Tigger and not suffering anymore from the illnesses of old age. My condolences on your loss.

How sad.

I have been worrying about the same thing happening to our tiny yorkie while we are on STJ in June. She has good days and bad days now, so we are boarding her at the vets while we are gone. She is only 11 yrs old, but has glaucoma, inflammatory bowel disease, and now chronic bronchitis.

She loves everybody and wants to be held all the time. I guess maybe she is a teeny bit "spoiled".

My sympathy on the loss of your much loved pet.

Thanks everyone for listening and for your condolences. I guess it bothered me too that I wasn't with my little buddy of 18 years when it happened.

Sorry for your loss. We've had, and lost, a number of pets over the years. It's kind of a stacked deck whenever we've gotten a new pup or kitten, because we know that we're going to outlive them. For many people one of their first experiences with death is the loss of a pet.

We have a shelf that holds the ashes and photos of our dear friends. We keep thinking that we should do something with the ashes, but we haven't figured out what yet, so they stay until we do.

Each loss is different. For some it involved us making that terrible decision that "it's time".One just went to sleep and never woke up. Two died traumatically. One terribly sad one was a young dog that got lost and we never knew what happened to. That loss was hard to grieve.

I expect that they're all hanging out at Rainbow Bridge and that when "it's time", it'll be a very sweet reunion. And I'll tell that little lost dog how sorry I am that I didn't keep her closer.

I don't know if Rainbow Bridge is real, but I choose to believe that it is. Seems like it should be.

Here's a quote I came upon:

"Pets come into our lives to teach us about love...they depart to teach us about loss. A new pet never replaces an old pet; it merely expands the heart."

Brenda, I'm so sorry to hear that. I know they are "only" animals, but you are so right, they are a big part of the family. I know exactly what you are going through.

When we came home from 2 weeks in VG recently, my mom told me that she had to take one of our cats to the vet and they kept her (the cat) for 2 nights. My mom didn't want to tell me when I was on vacation (thanks a lot for that). Now the cat fortunately is OK again.

Brenda, so sorry abou your cat. I have 3 and the same thing has happened to me on vacation.

In a way, there probably isn't anything that you could of done.

I'm sorry about the same thing this time when we go. Mom usually takes care of them, but she'll been ill. She still says she's going to get in the car and go over everyday and check on them, so now I have to worry double. About the cats and my Mom.

One thing though....when I come back and if Mom is feeding them, they're going to be fatter :)

That is so terrible. I’m so sorry for your loss. I have five cats and they are truly children to me. I love them dearly. I hope you find comfort in knowing that your cat lived a long happy life. I lost a cat almost exactly two years ago and she was only 14. It was really hard for me that she went so young.
