Donkey question

We will be in Coral bay on Thursday, oh my God, it's getting very close.
Well I know that there are donkeys around the house where we are staying. Do they bite, are you suppose to feed them? Don't think I have seen any mention of this population on the island. Also, I am wondering how many on island are there?

Dumb question, but I also really want to see my ticker!!!

I wouldn't reccomend feeding them, unless you want to share your vacation villa with them. They are smart aninmals and will go where the food is. Keep you garbage well covered.

Do they bite? I really don't think so, but they are not domesticated so I wouldn't try to pet one.

I've seen them bite each other (on Cinnamon- they caused quite a ruckus); they have some good-sized teeth on them! I wouldn't try to pet one either.

Thanks for the warnings guys. My first instict would certainly be to feed them! Can't afford any more borders.

The donkeys are so cool! The ones that were usually in the driveway of our villa when we got back from the beach wouldn't let me get close to them, but the ones that hang out down at East End will come right up to your car and stick their head in the window if you let them (!) but I don't think I'd give them an opportunity or reason to bite me (reason: feeding then stopping!)

The owners of the villa we will be staying at in Upper Carolina don't seem to care for donkeys. Donkeys are the reason they put the gate at the entrance of the driveway. It seems like donkeys have munched on certain plants they had planted around the villa (they said donkeys are landscaping nightmares).
I think donkeys are more well received by visitors to St. John than locals or villa owners. Personally, I will not feed them.

We were at Bayview on Ajax Peak, just above the smoothie truck. It was real "woodsie" there and I think they cut thru that area on their way to the beach. Just a guess.

One afternoon on STJ we were lazily floating in a serene rum haze in the villa pool, only in our birthday suits - almost achieving nirvana. All of sudden our nearly complete inner peace is instantly shattered when we hear the most incredibly loud caterwauling sounds coming from just the other side of the villa. We had no idea what poor tortured soul could make such a cacophony of sicken noises. We literally thought it was a human being in the most unimaginable pain. We flew out of pool and raced butt naked around the villa only to discover it was a just female donkey very loudly protesting the male donkey’s attempts to mount her. As we trudged back to the pool Anita exclaimed, "typical".

We stay at the Bay View on Ajax Mountain, which seems to get its fair share of donkeys.

Yep - that's what was happening at Cinnamon as well, and she was having none of it. I believe my comment at the time was also "Typical".

Well these guys were very friendly at Cinnamon a couple years ago although they would't go half on a sailboat for the day


And these guys were a pretty darn great bunch of A$$ES

Just petted some on the way back from Skinney Legs Friday night. Never met an A$$ on ST John I didn't like although I'm sure theres a few jackasses on island

I don’t think there is any concern for random biting but I wouldn’t feed them, biting being one of many reasons.

My parents had their share of spirited horses over the years that we needed to be very careful when hand-feeding treats as they weren’t above the occasional bite and they were trained, well fed, domesticated animals.

I was unpopular with a fellow Caneel guest a few years back when I pointed out that it was not a good idea for her small children to hand-feeding donkeys as one good nip could leave them with a missing/broken finger or two. (we were waiting for the tram) Both the kids and the donkeys were being aggressive and a bite and/or kick seemed likely.
