recommendations for a book club

I am putting together a book club to meet once a month. My clients want to be able to mingle and spend time outside the center with me,

The Devil and the White City.

It is a non-fiction two-sided story about a "respectable" serial killer in Chicago before and during the Chicago Columbian Exposition. The other side of the story is the background of the Chicago Columbian Exposition, the building of the fair site and stories of the Exposition.

It is a very fascinating book which is extremely well written.

Just some general info that may or may not be helpful--I belong to two book clubs. One is over 10 years old and made up of a mix of professional writers and other professionals. We are always serious about reading the books and carefully invite only new people in who share our reading taste and who will keep the club alive (by reading the book and showing up at the meetings.)

The other club is more of a fun night out. But, alas, like many book clubs, it started to fall apart. People had wildly different tastes, and with most people's time at a premium, X wouldn't want to read ABC if she thought it was fluff, and Y ONLY wanted to read popular stuff. And Z.... you get the picture. For a few months, there were no meetings at all. It was kind of dead.

Then someone got the idea to have a book report and swap instead. Now, everyone brings a book they've read and liked. They talk about it briefly, then at the end, there's a swap. It's still the fun night out but with more of a purpose.

I finally got around to The Kite Runner. While I think it is a good book, it isn't one to read in bed at night. So sad and disturbing (so far) that it kept me awake. (the family being displaced hits very close to home for me)

For discussion purposes, I think it would make a good club selection.

You know...I read that last year and didn't like it. Something about the authors really cheesed me off. I felt they were trying to "Out-Blanchard" the Blanchards. Just something about the tone of the author really rubbed me the wrong way.

Almost "Look at how great we are and what we did" (Just don't look at the fact that we're both working on stateside jobs while we tell you how we let it all go and "went native")

I read it in like 2 days, tossed it to my wife, with no opinions, and waited. 2 days later, she said the same things to me.

Maybe it's just us.

But...I intend to look at everyone's suggestions. I'm stuck in a glut of bad books I keep picking up at airports to pass time while I'm delayed. I've read some horrid crap in the past 18 months.

That's funny, I really liked that one. I liked the details about the sailing. To each their own.

I always hesitate to recommend books, but "The Story of O" by Pauline Réage always gets the conversation going!

The Story of O...yeah, that would go over well. How about page 26 of the Godfather, over and over again. (I think that's the page that we all scurried off to read back in the day because it had sex in it...right?)
