Aside from both heading off into the Alaskan wilderness, I think they were more different than they were alike. Treadwell had spent 12 summer seasons in Alaska before being killed during the 13th. McCandless didn't survive a season. Treadwell involved himself in environmental activism, although the NPS was in disagreement with him about some of his activities. He seems to have become quite grandiose and reckless but remained very involved with society and was actively promoting himself. McCandless seems to have disengaged from human society. I sort of think of McCandless as a lost soul who got in way over his head. I think of Treadwell as a self-important guy whose arrogance got the best of him.
