Question about carry-on luggage...

Post by STJlvrnSTL »

We leave in a few days for St. John. In years past we have carried 2 soft-sided coolers with meat and other perishable items on the plane. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is still allowed or if anyone has taken these types of items on board since the rules changed. I have searched the TSA website and Delta's website and they say nothing about bringing meat on board. Thanks in advance!

We have for years checked our meat locker through. Never had a problem and we travel all the way from the West Coast. It always arrives still frozen.

shouldn't be a problem -- worst thing that could happen is they'd make you check the bag.

I would make sure there's nothing with liquid (even if it's frozen liquid)...that's what they're mostly concerned about right now.

our cooler experience

Post by PA Girl »

I will share our TSA/cooler experience from November. I had a cooler packed with food, frozen juice and water, milk and snacks for our toddler. I had two blue ice cooler packs to keep everything cold (the hard plastic kind with blue liquid inside that you put in the freezer)

Outbound - the screeners didn't even look twice.

Returning - we were pulled aside while they x-rayed the cooler twice (or maybe three times) They then moved us to the side and unpacked the cooler and inspected the items.

It wasn't a big deal as we had plenty of time before boarding but I won't take frozen bottles again. It was the frozen liquid and blue ice packs that triggered the extensive evaluation.

I see on the TSA site, they even were banning snow globes, so they might have issues with any frozen liquid coolers. Plus when we went some of the people were really particular about how much carry on you have-one personal item and one carry on and that was it. Some of them were more particular than others from what we could see.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you all for the information. We are going to cross our fingers and just take the coolers on board. We only have to get through the security point in St. Louis because we check the coolers on the way back. Also there are six of us going so the number of carry-on bags is not a problem because not everyone has a carry-on bag. Thanks again!
