STJ Taxi to Coral Bay at night

Post by grfdlf67 »

We will be arriving on STJ at 9:20 pm in early June. I have heard that it may be difficult getting a taxi to Coral Bay. I called the STJ taxi association and I was told "no problem, mon." So, I'm not sure waht to expect.

We would be willing to hire the taxi for just two people.

Does anyone have any insight on this??

Thanks so much!

Not sure how long you are staying, etc. but you might want to consider renting a Jeep/car. I'm sure you could arrange with the Jeep rental company for late pick up. I think have seen this mentioned on the forum. Could get expensive if you need a taxi each time to go to beach, exploring, etc.

Where are you staying in Coral Bay ??. It is not impossible to get by without a car but it is not (imo) advisable.

I live in Coral Bay and taxi's really do not run out here at night - again not impossible but difficult - and they do not like to go to the villa's out here due to the roads.

My Mother in Law was staying at our house and was taking the bus back to our house from town when it decided to not run that hour (it also did not run yesterday the hour I wanted to go to town :x ) so they grabbed a taxi - cost for 2......$30.00 !!!!!
Now it should have been $9.00pp but they had a hard time finding one for 2 people in the middle of the afternoon and he charged what he wanted and they took it.

Just something to think about - and maybe you have one on hold and just don't want to drive at night so are going back the next day, but if you are in a villa you will be following a rep anyway :)

Our orginal flight plans were to land in STT by 7:00 pm. Now they changed the flight to land at 7:55 pm. So, we need to hustle to make the 9:00 ferry. Yes, we have a Jeep reserved for the next day from L&L. We were going to take the bus from Coral Bay to town at our leisure the next day to pick it up.

Maybe I'm a bit anal retentive  - I was a bit apprehensive picking the Jeep up that late and driving to Coral Bay after dark having never been there before (and driving on the the left, avoiding animals and other right sided tourists driving home from the bar, etc).

I've looked at St. John via Google Earth so much that I feel I know my way around the island pretty well and I've never been there! I looked pretty closely at the trip using Centerline road using Google Earth while reading about the trip from town to Coral Bay in "Feet, Fins, & Four Wheel Drive." I'm a very good driver, and it doesn't look to bad other than some curves and a few drop offs on the right side of the road. Maybe I am making more of this than I need to.

Do you think I could call ahead a day or so to arrange a taxi (I know we'd have to pay 30 - 40 bucks) or do you recommend just going with the late Jeep pickup if they allow it??

We are staying just up the hill from Skinny Legs (Simply St John villa). I can find that.

Thanks for your thoughts! :)

For myself, I wouldn't depend on being able to find a taxi to take me to Coral Bay at night. I'd be even less secure about one I'd arranged for by phone the day before. The guy you talk to on the phone isn't going to be the guy sitting in his taxi that night. This could conceivably all work out---but what if it doesn't? If you can't get a taxi, you have no Plan B. Even if it does work out, it puts you at your villa with nothing to eat or drink after a day of travel.

As for the vehicle rental, many companies aren't going to make themselves available that late. A very few may be willing to just leave the vehicle for you to pick up, then you come back the next day to do the paperwork.

You mention locating your villa via Google Earth. Isn't someone from the management company meeting you to escort you there? You could get a ride with them. Of course, that would get you to the villa with nothing there to eat or drink. Perhaps they could assist you with the vehicle---get it from the car rental company for you.

This is the kind of uncertainty that I wouldn't want to be facing late at night after a day of travel. I'd consider spending the night on STT and heading for STJ the next morning.

I would arrange to pick up your rental that evening.

I find it no problem to drive at night - there are no animals to avoid (all of the cows, sheep, donkey's and goats are off the road at night :) ) and you can see the headlights of oncoming traffic long before you see the vehicle :) Just remember to stay left - you know "shoulder to shoulder" ie: the drivers shoulder next to the shoulder of the road and you will be fine and at approx 9:30pm on there is very little traffic going to Coral Bay anyway.

The hardest part to me would be finding the villa - they are never easy to find so make sure you have excellent directions and be very clear with them (alot of times it is hard to figure out what is a road vs a driveway vs a donkey trail)

Like Lex said, I think if someone from the villa mgmt. co. is meeting you, I'd make arrangements to pick up the Jeep late, or have them get it for you. Then the management rep. will probably take you past a market before heading out to Coral Bay. If you're following someone out there, you should have no problem driving it at night. It's not a real scary road.

Thanks for the insights. The villa on-site rep has yet to contact us, so I'm not yet sure what that plan will be.

Slim Man has van service coming online. You could schedule a drop off and pick up to get your car.
