Help! Beach Advice

Post by bulldoglover »

Hi to all. We are leaving for STJ in 8 days. We went last year and fell in love with the island. We stayed at Caneel but rented a jeep for the day. We loved exploring the island and decided to rent a place instead this time. We went to several beaches on our day out...Maho, Salt Pond, and Lameshur and we loved them all. I am now 6 months pregnant :) and am looking for some beaches with easy access?? I don't want to risk falling hiking or overexert myself as I want to save all of my energy for snorkeling! Do any of you have any suggestions for some beaches that would be easy for us to get to with some good snorkling? Maho is definetely on the list...Salt Pond might be too rough of a walk this time around. Thanks to all for the help and will post a trip report when we get back..love reading everyone's.

I agree with the Capt. Hawksnest and Cinnamon both have bathrooms and cinnamon has food service.

The Captain's got it pretty well covered. You could also re-visit Caneel's main beach.

Lameshur Bay has parking right at the beach like Maho and usually almost deserted.Unlike that (guy?) on Oprah I have never been pregnant but the road to Lameshur would probably tax someone 6 months pregnant. If you drive slow it should not bother you and I think it would be a perfect place. It has become our favorite.Make sure you go to Little Lameshur which is the second beach. You can,t miss it.
The snorkeling around to the right on the point between Europa is probably the deepest and most intense snorkeling on the island. It's not for the faint of heart. The surf can be really strong and you need to be comfortable in rough water.

While I like Francis, I found the loose sand along the water line to be a bit challenging when carrying an infant (and later a toddler) out of the water as I seemed to sink in and couldn't keep my footing.

Not that I wouldn't go snorkelling there while 6 month pregnant, just make sure hubby is there with an arm if your mobility is not what is normally is.

Have an awesome trip. I loved swimming/being in the water when pregnant. It was the only time (from six months on) that I could lay on my stomach.

Wow. Everyone on this board is always so helpful. Thanks for the advice. I will definetely put those on my list. I will be careful snorkeling...not sure how far I should go out. I am looking forward to laying on my stomach in the water though! Thanks again for the help. Does anyone know a good place to get bottled water on the island? I'm sure I will need plenty of it. (btw..pregnant man=weird)

Park across the street , you will see a gate. Just through the gate is the beach, very close, completly flat.
