Where to buy fish?
Where to buy fish?
So, the fish trap market is closing, which is a bummer. Nature's Nook is closed--does that mean that the men that used to set up there with their catch are gone? The stuff at Starfish is not fresh enough for me.
John was joking that he was going to have to rent a boat to take us back to St. Thomas for fish shopping. Either that or we are going to have to sign up for a fishing charter!
So, where can I currently find fresh fish to cook? Cruz Bay or Coral Bay...we are staying a week on each side this time.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Hi Liamsaunt,
When we were down in Jan there was a guy selling fish just around the corner from the Lumberyard, beside a local bar/eatery on the corner.
It appeared to a local person, so hopefully they are still there. I know all of our (with the exception of me
) is looking forward to a fish meal in May.

I am sure that it is a ciguatera concern. If you eat reef fish you have a chance of contracting it. John's aunt got it from eating grilled barracuda when she lived in Jamaica, and she was really sick for about 6 months. So, avoid the reef fish. Open ocean stuff like tuna, mahi, etc. is generally considered to be safe.

I got snapper (red and yellow) from the folks by Island Blues in Feb. It was very good. He had some tuna, as well, I believe. He told me they were there pretty much every day. Take your own ziploc bag- they catch the fish to deliver to local homes, not necessarily to sell to tourists, but he was happy to take my money anyway.

Hi Waterguy,
No there have not been any lobsters for sale for ages
I was told it is due to the rough sea between STJ and STX where the lobster fishermen were from.
As far as fresh fish, the guy's who sell opposite Sweet Plantains are very good. Their traps are miles off the coast
and they are always fun to buy from. They used to be there late afternoons but last week they were there around 9am in the morning - Rick when were they there for you ???
Hope this helps
Pia
