Well, surfing this forum is DANGEROUS (to my bank account balance, at least)...on a whim, we've decided to take our moms to introduce them to our favorite place, and we're leaving two weeks from today!!
We're fairly hardcore snorkelers, but our moms will just be starting out...what do you think would be the best beach to go to for their very first snorkeling experience? They're both pretty good swimmers, so that's not really an issue.
We have a few ideas, but I wanted to see what the experts had to say!
I've always thought Trunk was a great place to try snorkeling for the first time - provided the swells have calmed down. I would also make sure to time it such that the cruise ship tour groups have left for the day (mid-afternoon usually).
I don't think you could go wrong with either Trunk or Maho. Maho on the right is very cool, shallow and good for first timers. Trunk is good too, with the underwater trail...
Have fun... I'm envious. I am already planning our next trip in February!
Another vote for Hawksnest. An amazing amount to see just a short snorkel from the beach. However, parts are almost too shallow for someone with little experience.

I think Trunk would get my vote for a few reasons. If someone is a beginner and a bit nervous they may find some comfort and safety in numbers. I also find that the underwater signs can be distracting and calming for those of us who get a bit nervous waiting to turn around and see one of the "friendly" STJ sharks
My two cents is for Maho. I "learned" to snorkle there several years ago. I can't swim and I'm afraid of water (great combination for someone who loves St. John, right??) and this was a very calm, shallow uncrowded place for me to try to overcome my fear. I was able to practice enough there that I eventually went out on one of the day trips and snorkled the caves - a fantastic experience marred only by my hyperventilating.
