"St. John and Eleuthera
It requires a bit of innovation to get to the Caribbean and back for $750 over a three-day weekend, but it’s by no means impossible. St. John, for instance, is known as the most pristine of the United States Virgin Islands, but you don’t have to spend $530 a night or more at Caneel Bay to enjoy it.
Cinnamon Bay Campground, on the unspoiled north coast, offers 10-by-14-foot canvas two-person tents, in a wooded area near the beach, for $86 a night. You can also bring a tent and camp on a bare site for $27; the less adventurous can stay in cottages starting at $119 a night, double occupancy.
Campers share bathrooms. No permits are required, and while Cinnamon Bay’s cottages have been reserved for much of the season, tents and bare sites are still available through the winter. The campground’s Tree Lizard Restaurant offers basic fare like burgers and sandwiches at reasonable prices: breakfast is under $5, lunch under $10 and dinner about $15.
A US Airways round trip from New York to St. Thomas was available on Orbitz this week for $456. From St. Thomas, the combined costs for a taxi and ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John is $17 from Charlotte Amalie, or $20 from Red Hook. A cab from Cruz Bay to Cinnamon Bay costs around $10 a person."
