First trip to St.John--where to stay with a 2 year old?
We are travelling with our 3 year old and 1 year old in May and selected 'Andante by the Sea'. It met our child needs of having the ability to contain the children with bedrooms opening into the house vs. the outside. It also has sufficient deck railings and a pool gate.
It was recommended on another forum by someone who had stayed there with their 2 year old. PM me and I'll send you more information.
It's a 3BR but is reasonably priced.
We also stayed at the Westin when our daughter was 9 months old. Less space than a villa, but amenities on-site alleviated the concerns we had for our first trip to STJ.
Definitely rent a car. Maho is our favorite beach for youngsters.

You may be able to get by with a 1 bedroom if your child is small enough to sleep in a pack n play or crib still. We traveled when my daughter was 18 months and she slept in a pack n play in the bedroom with us.
Like everyone has said before, I think the big things to avoid are any villas where the only access to bedrooms is via outside entrances, or villas where the bedrooms open directly onto the pool deck. Even if the bedrooms all open onto an interior area, you may find that they are far enough apart that you wouldn't be comfortable that you could hear your child in their room. Also, I'm not too crazy about any villas where the bedrooms (even if they're together) are in a separate "pod" from the living or main gathering area, since in the evening you will be separate from the toddler while you're still up hanging out and they're sleeping.
I agree with the other posters to ask the villa rental agencies for their recommendations.
Also, bring your own outlet plug covers.
You will have a great time, the water is very calm, especially Maho and Salt Pond, but in the summer just about any of the beaches will be very calm. Maho and the north shore beaches get afternoon shade. All the main restaurants are very kid friendly and casual, and it's really a great vacation.

My kids are older, but I still don't want our bedrooms to be too separated. If I could go back tomorrow, and believe me I'm plotting all the time, I'd stay at Fun & Contentment. I'm a Coral Bay fan, and this villa has 2 bedrooms on either side of the great room, and a nice looking pool and view. Only downside is that it only seems to be available through Caribbean Villas, which I haven't used but have read some varying opinions about.
