How was Cabo?

Post by iowaguy »

Hi BugBlu---I was curious how you liked Cabo. In your first post, you seemed a little wistful for St. John, then you seemed pretty upbeat after a few margaritas at Cabo Wabo (my experience exactly). Do tell when you have a minute.

I was actually going to try to do a trip report but can't bring myself to do it. It was OK ~ just OK. I would not go back.

The good points: The weather was nice, the scenery was pretty, there was a beach, they did massages on the beach, I saw wales, and Cabo Wabo (Sammy Hagar's bar) was pretty cool.

The bad points: It was so windy that the desert dust blew everywhere including your eyes, the water was extremely cold (so much so that I didn't go in the water once!), and the vendors were just insane.

They were EVERYWHERE ~ ALL THE TIME!! When I was laying on the beach(in the roped off area that vendors were not allowed into) they sent up camp right in front of the ropes. You couldn't see the water 20 feet in front of you because of all the vendors. They sold everything you could imagine. Rugs, blankets, pottery, jewelery, dolls, kites, etc. Make eye contact and you were done for. When ever the security walked away from the beach, the vendors would literally jump the ropes and attack you for a sale. It was rediculous. And heaven forbid you really wanted to buy something because it took an hour to bargin with them to get a fair price. It was crazy.

Even at 1am walking back from Cabo Wabo we were harrassed constantly by 4 and 5 year olds (no I'm not kidding) trying to sell us chic-let gum.

I couldn't take it. I was not relaxing what-so-ever. I felt like I couldn't talk to anyone, look at anyone, or go anywhere without putting my game face on.

The only thing that kept me from total disappointment was knowing that I was 1 week closer to St. John. April soon come!!!!

Have to agree with The Captain. We got a cheapo deal to Puerto Vallarta 9 years ago and while the vendors were pesky, they were nothing compared to the timeshare sellers. I finally had to resort to pretending to be a Hungarian who spoke neither English nor Spanish although I speak both. These people would literally jump out of the bushes.

Our last night there we were having dinner and a lady came up to us while we were having dessert and asked us how our dinner was. We assumed she was the owner of the restaurant. Then she sat down at our table and pulled out her brochure and tried to get us to "the presentation" the next morning. I wanted to tell her to go away, but you never know, she might have been the wife of the chief of police or something.

We went to Cozumel 4 years ago, which they have just about ruined by the way, and noticed that the timeshare people seemed to be confined to booths at the airport, so maybe the government has clamped down on them.

We are pretty much done with Mexico too for those and other reasons.

Thanks for the report, BugBlu. I can understand your frustration with the beach vendors---by that description I'm guessing you were on Medano Beach, the main beach in town. My kids actually liked dealing with the beach vendors and haggling for jewelry (hopefully thats all).

On both trips we made to Cabo, we had a car and went to some nice, quiet beaches on the "corridor" area outside of town with no beach vendors and prettier water too. I liked Cabo enough that I would go back---the desert has a different kind of beauty--but its not St. John.

That is exactly what I was talking about. When it wasn't a "goods" type vendors it was the "timeshare" people. At one point I made the mistake of asking a nice enought looking lady where I could buy cigarettes. Within 2.3 seconds, she had a cigarette in my mouth and a time share brouchure in my hand. Heck, she had me half way to the hotel before I could run. It was crazy and I just didn't like it.

The scarey part is that the couple we went with (that own a timeshare there) are coming with us to STJ in April. They are either going to dislike STJ or sell their timeshare in Cabo real quick

XOXO
