Red Hook ferries leave every hour on the hour (6am to midnight I believe).

Downtown (Charlotte Amalie) ferries leave at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 4pm, and 5:30pm.

Hope this helps! Though I AM jealous that tomorrow at this time you'll be in the warmth and beauty of St. John and I'll still be stuck here in the deep freezer...

car barge

Post by papabou »

st john lover,

thanks for your reply, butttt our liberty can't get on either redhook or ca ferry, must take redhook barge. unfortunately, the barge schedules don't appear to be as dependable as passenger ferry. barges sometimes are on slowest island time. std sched calls for 4, 4:30, 5, 6, 6:30 & 7 last one. know from experience barges don't always keep a full sunday schedule. just don't want to be in redhook no place to stay come monday. anyone have a pediction for tomorrow?

where's home for you? i was in breckenridge last sat night and awoke to 7 below and i need some island heat.

Sorry pappabou. Didn't read carefully; assumed "ferries' but indeed you wrote "barge."

Anyway, in the 15 years we've been going to St. John, have only used the car barges to/from the airport twice. For us, personally, it was NOT a good experience so we just went back to renting a vehicle on St. John. Have really gotten to know and love the people we rent from.

Basically, I think you'll be fine (sounds like your flight gets in around 3pm or so). You should be able to catch either the 4pm Roanoke or the 5pm Boyson or Republic. As you suggested, whereas the people ferries generally depart on time, the car barges are less predictable. Though in high season they generally keep to their full schedule.

As the link above says, it's best to "show up early and be patient." I know one of the barge lines has a new, much larger barge that it transports cars to St. John with, so the likelihood of gettting a spot is greatly increased from past years. (since the opening of the new car barge dock in St. John).

Have a great trip!
