Live from Keep Me Posted in Coral Bay....our last full day..

Post by LysaC »

Hello again forumites! It's our last full day here in Coral Bay. I'm sunburned, dehydrated, sad, anxious about flying and...to make matters worse...it's been raining all morning.

I thought I would be sitting by the pool getting a lunch buzz on so I could avoid thinking about flying but...to no avail.

Maybe the island is triyng some reverse psychology on me so I won't be so sad to leave tomorrow. Like a mother pushing her little ones out of the nest. Tough love. Boy, I sure can be dramatic!

I left off on our first day on STJ.....

We have been staying at Rainbow Beach Villa in Coral Bay on Johnson Bay. It's a huge house but a little dated. Awesome pool and pool deck. And a flat drive from the road to the house...BONUS! We can actually take a "quick" drive to the store!

Beaches: Haulover is a staple for us. Tried Francis: very long, lots of sandy beach, pelicans galore, plenty o' shade, calm, bright blue, lots of bugs after 3pm. Yikes! Hit Vie's for the first time as well: great snorkeling on both sides, lots of pelican activity, chaise chairs provided are just awesome!

Also should mention that I ate at Vie's for the first time and, seriously, the garlic chicken w/ honey johnny cake IS to die for! The conch fritters are also good.

Another first: first turtle sighting while snorkeling. At Vie's. Fun!

Our best day was a powerboat catamaran charter with Capt George at Flyaway Charters. This was our second time with George but my in-laws first time. My mom-in-law said that out of her 7 years of coming to St John, this was the best charter she had ever done. And this was stated AFTER she was thrown off the seat by a freak wave and thought she broke her toe! We hit a few places in the BVI's, saw a leather back turtle right off the front of the boat (huge and George said he had only seen @ 1/2 dozen in his lifetime)....email me for more details if you're interested.

We've eaten at:
Cafe Roma: takeout pizza, big and filling, not great but good.
Aqua Bistro: dinner, melt-in-your-mouth pork tenderloin (was as tender as prime rib), live steel pan music, improvised martini w/ peach something-or-other, highly recommended.
Miss Lucy's: dinner under the sea grape trees and it rained, paella was very yummy and a large portion, hubby's steak looked perfect, it was aaaall gooood. Island Blues: lunch & drinks a few times, all the specials were good, chik fingers and fries are always a good stand-by there, rum punch kicked my ass. Donkey Diner: breakfast, yummy as usual, good portion.
Foxy's Taboo on Jost (not the bar): great pizza, great Taboo burger, chix kabob looked yummy, all was fresh.
Willy-T: not too impressed but had to do it I guess, seems better for a 20-ish crowd of half-naked & mostly drunk college kids (I never went through that phase myself).

There's a new breakfast place in Cocoloba (where Aqua Bistro is). I don't know the name of it but it is run by a guy named Casper. It's just him. He does b-fast and bagged lunches. He was slammed the morning we went and we waitied a bit but what we got was good & hot and yummy! We wish him lotsa luck!

ST JOHN SPICE! Finally met Ruth and she was gracious and wonderful as was her hubby (again) and the young lady who works with them. When we first walked in, I asked the young lady if Ruth was available and she instantly and without hesitation said: "Are you from the forum?" Ruth should be voted the official ambassador to St John and make a little dough from her popularity! It was so fun to meet all of them! Bought @ four bottles of hotsauce and a few trinkets and ran back to Coral Bay!

I did not make it to the get together at the Beach Bar. Hubby & Dad-in-law are rabid football fans and there was no way I was dragging them away from the TV. I hope everyone had a great time!

Well...I think I've reported almost everything. If I think of something else, I'll jump on-line next week.

If anyone has specific ?'s, please post them or PM me.

Looks like the sun is coming out...let's see for how long :). I can look out the door from the computer and see the palm trees waving in the wind, see the sun bounce off the bricks, see the blue sky and puffy white clouds. Maybe I can still get my lunch buzz on....

it looks sunny on the web cam so maybe it's coming your way. or run over to the other side for some sun.

but really you don't need the pool to get the lunch buzz on ;)

good luck with the flight(s) - be brave!

DUNKIN' DONUTS dough!
Thanks again for bringing us the donuts, you can't imagine how good a Dunkin' Donut tastes after over two years.
See you next time on St. John!

Thanks for the Live report. Can't wait to see Coral Bay for myself. And the turtles, and Vi's, and the beaches, and STJ Ruth, and the trails, and well, I could go on and on! Your flight home will be just fine!!! :)
