Passports for Minors

Post by Chickadee »

Does anyone know how long a passport for a minor child is good? My kids are 2 and 3 months old and I doubt we'll be doing any international travel any time soon - wondering if it's worth getting them passports now or if it makes more sense to wait until they're older or we are planning a trip that requires them.

OK, I know it's been asked before, but can someone remind me if passports will be required for USVI travel from the US? Is it beginning in January 2007?

Thanks,
Jennifer

I'd wait until they are older. I'm not sure if the State Dep. even issues passports for people that young. I might be wrong though. But I'd still wait until they get older.

It doesn't matter how young you are - you can get a passport. I think they expire in 7 years (?) just like adults. My sister had a friend that went to Europe with a passport that had a picture of her sitting on her mom's lap as a toddler.

Hi Chickadee -

I have an application here in front of me - I'm planning to get them for my kids who are a bit older than yours.

For children under the age of 16, passports are valid for 5 years for a total cost of $82.

For adults, 16 years and older, they are valid for 10 years and the cost is $97.

You use the same application for both adults and children - you can get them at any post office location.

As far as USVI travel, I don't believe you will need one, although it makes it much easier.

No you do not need a passport for the USVI, as well as any US territories.
