Actually, all has never been well in Haiti, not necessarily the Carib or even So America. Haiti is considered the most desperate of all countries in the Western Hemisphere. A basket case in all things political and economic.

Jorge - Too funny about the trucks!! So true in our experiences. (Not always, but most of the time.)

When I was in banking, my boss would tell us "don't bring me loans for any Pick'em Up contractors, I don't finance $50,000 ego trucks for people with no working capital."

We are iced in too. The crew made it to essential jobs only. We have about 2 inches of sleet on the ground at 10am.

Try running a cleaning business in this country and making people understand why your rates are higher than that other company. All of us that do run our businesses on the up and up are just suckers when it comes to this issue.

Jorge- It's not that I did not have business. I just get tired of the excuses people offer up when I raise an eyebrow at their staff and I tire of hearing the same stuff you do from other contractors. And then the media is feeding that myth. It's pathetic. Americans are far from lazy but we won't work for free.

Rick- I told the aliens where you live. They are coming to get you!

I guess you never know. I wouldn't have guessed that these would be the responses that that article would have evoked.

My response was not to the article. It was to the title you posted and to the other responses. It is heart wrenching that there are people who are eating dirt for sustenance. I think most of us(in this country) understand why people risk their lives to come here. I think most of feel for these people BUT I think the people arguing the heartfelt side of the issue do not understand the financial and cultural ramifications that is brings on this country. They are quick to accuse people (against illegal immigration) of being racist and heartless when that is not it at all. We simply cannot assimilate that many people on an ongoing basis without social systems going bankrupt here.

Off soap box now.
