Whales in Rendezvous

Post by minnjim »

I was reading in Feet Fins, etc that occasionally whales can be seen in Rendezvous bay. Has anybody actually seen one? Or anywhere else on st. John for that matter. Obese cruisers floating off Maho do not count.

Haven't seen whales, but have seen dolphins a few times.

I have not personally, because I have never been on island at the right time, but I have read comments in the guests books for villas we've rented off Maria Bluff that people have seen humpbacks coming through, usually right around this time of year. Of course, they might have been making it up! :D

Was it last year that there was a whale shark hanging around kind of close to St. John? Does anyone remember?

minnjim-
I also have read this but haven't seen any. I have seen dolphins though and a few small (don't panic  ) sharks. Being a certified diver I have read that it is more common around the Bahama and Turk & Cacios Islands usually around late February through March since this is migrating season.
It's a big ocean though and I wouldn't doubt that it happens occasionally.

I talked to two people last Saturday that saw whales just off the coast last week. It's a little early but apparently they were in the SFD channel-- maybe heading for a day trip to Jost, like all good island visitors. ;)

We were coming back from Jost on Sunday, January 20th, when a whale breached in front of us, north of Cinnamon Bay. We stopped the boat and watched it for a while. Beautiful.

I was told it must have been a rogue whale, that pods of them can usually be seen off the south shore starting in April...

We saw a mother/baby humpback pair in Reef Bay last Feb. after our park service-sponsored Reef Bay hike. We were on board the dive boat taking us back to Cruz Bay. The captain just slowed down so the passengers could get a look. My husband actually got a couple of photos.

We saw one this past Saturday just to the north of Johnsons reef off of Trunk Bay.
