Where to go in August/September

Post by flip-flop »

I would like to go somewhere warm and on the water in August or September. Does a place exist that is not 1000 degrees but is still warm and pleasant with beautiful beaches?

If you have any interest in Cape Cod, I could certainly give you some good local pointers and even some hidden gems that the tourists haven't found. I may have to pm that info to keep it protected though.;)
It probably depends on what you want, but this area can really cater to nearly anyone and August can be really beautiful and Sepember quieter, yet still warm.

Bermuda?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

We've enjoyed Chatham (on the Cape) in late August, early September. It's still pretty warm, but the crowds start to decrease. The water can still be a tad on the cold side.

Ondine - I'd love to hear of some of the gems. Even though it is an hour away, I'm still pretty much a tourist when it comes to the Cape.

We are thinking about Bermuda for this Labor Day; haven't been there since 2004. However, our favorite little hotel's rates went from ~$200 to $300+. Need to do more research.

my sister has a little place in Wells, Maine for rent. It's a cute 2 bedroom cottage. That's kind of a haul for you though - is this a flying vacation?

Cape Ann, MA. has some beautiful beaches and lots of charm. Late August/September weather is just perfect IMO. Bermuda would be my pick though and probably is just an hour flight from VA.

You could go the Knob in Woods Hole, a high point of land that juts out into the ocean in the morning light, have a hearty breakfast in Falmouth, drive to Wellfleet and hike to Jeremy Point, at low tide, and see a beach on the Cape that is truly untouched, see the sunset at Race Point in P-town, and then wind it up with dinner at the Mews (p-town). Makes for an incredible day!
I don't know if I should have started a separte message for this, but enjoy to all. :)

Thanks y'all. I think I've been talked into keeping it local (sort of) and heading to the OBX in late August.

Though the other options are mighty tempting. I am going to wait until end of March to decide. Once I get back from Disney I'll need a distraction!

Check out Bald Head Island in North Carolina. It will be hot, but so are the Outer Banks. It is a lovely place, no cars on the island, just golf carts. Lots of things to explore, bike riding, etc...beaches are not crowded at all. I really only want to go to St. John, but we are going to Bald Head this summer for my parent's 50th anniversary. It is about the only place am really happy to be going to besides St.John.

It is pricey, but if you are going to Duck or any nicer part of the outer banks, I think the prices will be fairly comparable.

Will look into this. DO they rent houses? Or is it mostly resorts/hotels? I'll be googling ;)
