St. John in August

Post by jdw »

Is it way too hot? Are most of the restaurants open? I don't recall seeing many trip reports from an August trip but we have a friend who wants to surprise his wife with a trip to St. John for her birthday - which is in August!

Our first trip to the Virgin Islands was late July – early August. It was hot but not so hot that we didn’t have a good time. Just remember to drink a lot of water and you’ll be find.

We were there the last week of July, and it wasn't bad at all. We didn't find any restaurants or shops closed. Of course, I live in Kentucky where it can get really hot so I'm used to it. It was way better to be on STJ in 80 degree weather than home with the same.

We were there in August of this year and it was sooooo nice. We didn't find it hot at all. We were there in May and it seemed much cooler than May and the mosquitos weren't near as bad. Of course, we are in the midwest so we left a hot summer. It was in the 80's at our tropical location while the people back home had it in the 100's that week. In May we were constantly hot at the outdoor restaurants and in August we never felt too warm at all. We used the hot tub almost every night outside.

I think anytime in St. John is better than a regular day at home!

Been in August twice. It's hot, but as someone else said, no hotter than it was in NC.

Some restaurants in Cruz Bay were closed, but only 1 or 2.

We're going back next August. Another STJ birthday for me!

We were there at the end of August this year right after hurricane Dean passed to the south of the VIs, so you do run that risk.
We were amazed at how nice it was. Mid 80s, humidity was not bad, stays warm at night, might need AC to sleep. Passing showers and clouds made for amazing sunsets almost every night and rainbows on day of departure.

Ive only been down in July and August. Hubby is a school teacher so you know how that goes, lots of time off, just no flexibility. Was there the same week as JMQ right after Hurricane Dean skimmed past. I concurr, although in full disclosure one friend on the August trip kept on remarking that it was "Hot as Balls". But she lives in Vencie Beach Ca ( on the beach) and I think she's spoiled. For me a native NYC'er its no worse than being here in August, and I don't have to ride the subway :-). DO ABSOLUTLEY get trip insurance. Its so worth the peace of mind . Have a great trip!

PS,

There are resturant closings but check out St John Spice's website as Ruth posts a great list of who's open and who's closed. Although some of your favorites might be closed there is no shortage of places to eat.

Your friend is far more refined than our group. In 2006, it was so hot the locals were complaining.

It was hotter than "hot as balls" that week. We made a list of things it was as hot as. None are suitable for printing here.

August is my favorite time of the year. The island is less crowded, less expensive, and the water is probably at its warmest. When it's really hot, your never too far from the water. Since it is the wet season; the hillsides are dark green and there are plenty of flowers in bloom. Finally, the days are long so you get the biggest bang for your buck.

Kind Regards,
