Day trip to The Baths

Post by snorkelfan »

Hello everyone: I am newly regestered to the forum but have been reading it since before our first trip to St. John last May. We are going again in April as we fell in love with the island. We have been to quite a few places but found that nothing beats St. John. What we are wondering is can someone recommend who does the best trip to the BVI's to the Baths and is it worth it. We have never gone and we both have passports.

Also, what is your favorite resteraunt with the best view of a sunset? Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

John and I took the New Horizons 2 charter to the Baths and tought it was a fun day. You start out at the Baths, take a walking tour through there, then head to Marina Cay for lunch (pretty island, so-so food), then snorkel at Guana Island (awesome, made the whole day completely worth it), and finally go to Jost Van Dyke for a couple hours of beach time and painkillers.

For a sunset dinner, I would recommend a table on the rail at Asolare (make a reservation for 5:30 PM to be sure you get on the rail). The food is expensive, but it is very delcious, and the views are spectacular.

Another good restaurant with a view is Zozos. It's Italian, located at the Gallows Point resort. We really enjoyed our food here, and they have a nice wine list too.

Ditto - loved New Horizons II and the sunset dinner at Asolare. Asolare gave hubby gin to rub on his extremities to stop the mosquitos - we don't think it worked, but we found it humorous. Have fun.

We took the LIMNOS Charter to the Baths to tour & swim, snorkling the caves at Norman Island then my boys were at the wheel of the boat taking us back to St. John. They provided breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks & rum drinks. There were about 20 onboard but maybe it could hold more? We had a blast & was the highlight of our trip. Can't remember the cost per person but my credit card bill said $325 for the 4 of us.
If you can find a charter to do the Baths & Jost Van Dyke in the same day that would be fun too!!

Here is a video link to our sunset dinner at ZOZO's ~

We also took the Limnos trip. Twice.05 & 06. Enjoyed both trips very much. The Limnos boat is a 54' catamerand and the New Horizons is I would guess about a 40 - 45' Sail Boat. We plan on doing the new Horizons this Feb. Limnos was $110. or $120. per adult including the fee for BVI entry. Limnos offers a smoth ride and large cabin area inside and out and travels much faster than a sail boat but you sacrifice the peace and quite of a sail powered vessel.Time can be of the essence when traveling by boat to places like Virgin Gorda. The trip however in my opinion is not to be missed. Quite an experience for all ages. As an aside, we also took a trip to Foxies and the Soggy Dollar (White Bay) on Jost aboard "DAYDREAMER" which is a 54' or so motor/sailer catamarand. A fantastic trip. Immaculate boat and excellent crew. Lunch here was on your own at Foxies for like $10 and the Chicken Roti was awesome. About the same $ as the VG trips. Don't hesitate. Do a few if you can. It is well worth it.One caution, if you try and do VG and JOST in one day you may find yourself somewhat rushed at each stop. Exploring is what this is all about so give yourself ample time. Just for example the Limnos trip, which left from Red Hook STT was apporx. a 70 mile round trip adventure. So at 20-25 mph with stops. You get the idea. Have a blast.

I just wanted to clarify that the New Horizons trip I mentioned is the new horizons 2 boat--it is a powerboat, not a sailboat. I think it would take an awfully long time to get to the baths in a sailboat!

That said, next time we do a charter, we are probably going to go the sailboat route, maybe the new horizons sailboat or else Captain Phil. The baths were interesting and all, but I liked the snorkeling part of the trip better. I also would not have minded skipping the sitdown lunch on Marina Cay in favor of more snorkel time.
