Suggestion for you -- for the cost of that underwater housing you could get a great little underwater camera. My husband and I both have Canon digital SLRs (me the 30D, him the 5D) but for snorkeling it's nicer to have a tiny, light, digital point-and-shoot that is waterproof and has a wrist strap. My husband got one before we went to the Great Barrier Reef and it was perfect. I will try to find out what kind he got but there are lots of options out there for well under $200.

Lisa,
Thanks! I did some quick checking and I think you're right. It'll probably be cheaper to just get a new camera designed for underwater use. I love that the price of digital cameras has gotten to the point where you can pick up a new one for something like this and not have to break the bank! Let me know which one you guys have and if you happen to have any sample photos you could share, that'd be great!

I went to Ohio U. Say hello to everyone at The Pub for me! Best 4-1/2 years of my life...so far...I think.

We'll cross paths probably sooner than later. I'm with you as far as not going anywhere else. St. John just has everything that is good and beautiful in the world. (God, I don't think I can wait till April...must...get...toes...in...sand...now...)
I'm in Tennessee now, but my family has a farm outside of Athens. Which is good, because when I go home, I'm totally going to get a Pub cheeseburger. They might be as good as Skinny Legs', although the view is not that great.

When did you go to OU? I was there from 1994-1999. I was also not on the 4-year plan, although spring quarter of my senior year I only had to get one "C" (of my four classes) to actually graduate.

The other good thing about a waterproof camera is that if you fall in the ocean accidentally it doesn't get ruined ... not like that happened or anything.

Welcome to the forum!

I would second the recommendation to just get an underwater camera with its housing. My canon housing and camera cost $500 total, and it is great. For what I paid, it takes really nice underwater pictures.

Lulu76,
I was there from 1987-91-ish. My wife went there also but we didn't know each other. We met playing pool a few years later. I know what you mean about those Pub burgers! Mmmmmm...may have to make a road trip back to the old stomping grounds. Also couldn't resist Dr. Pizza or Souflaki (sp?) wings.

Gromit & CA girl - thanks!

No Dr. Pizza these days. Souvlaki's changed hands, but I think it's still there. Hole in the Wall is gone now, as is Late Night pizza -- two of my favorites.

I want to call my mom, tell her I'll be there in seven hours and go eat Burrito Buggy before the students leave!

Welcome! Looks like your aligning yourself for husband of the year with that great anniversary surprise! I'll be in STJ 5/2 - 5/9 but am ferrying over to STX for the ironman (only as a spectator for a friend). Unfortunately, will probably not make it back in time on Sunday for The Beach Bar jazz (bummer). Don't worry, time will pass quickly and you'll be there before you know it (okay, probably not but that's what I try to convince myself of). Ali~

It's the Pentax Optio, it's right around $200 depending on where you buy it. He did a lot of research before deciding on this one. It takes video too. When you see it you can't believe it can go right in the water -- no protective housing -- but it does! I think we got it at B&H but there is a link to it on Amazon right here on the site: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... TUCCVJ7DGE

Lisa,
Thanks for the camera info! It looks like Pentax has a new version out, the Optio W30 7.1MP and with a $30 rebate it is only $188. I'm going to add it to my Amazon shopping cart and keep an eye on it until it gets closer to our trip date. Price will probably come down even more by then. But it looks like exactly what I want. Thanks again!

I fried my camera on our recent trip to Virgin Gorda---it really doesn't take much water to destroy one. So I've been looking and thinking about cameras. I went ahead and replaced my Canon but decided against buying a housing after looking at the less expensive underwater camera options. The Pentax is the one that I like, but since I'm not going to be using one soon, I'm just going to wait and see what's available before our next trip.

There is a thread on TTOL though:

http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/ ... art=1&vc=1

that has me considering other options.
