Renting a Boat

Post by texascook »

Does anyone know if you can rent a boat w/out a captain and crew? We will have a Coast Guard Licensed captain with us on our next trip and he would like to rent a boat and be our captain. There will be 8-10 of us. Thank you in advance.

Check out Ocean Runner. They have several bare boat powerboats to rent. The largest says it will hold 10.

Yes you can rent without a captain as long as he has bluewater experience. Nauti-Nymph or Ocean Runners.

Captain Jay....what's bluewater experience mean? We have a boat and regularly take it near Cape May and into the ocean. Would we qualify? We're only certified by the Coast Guard and neither of us have our Captains License.

Connie,
More than likely you will qualify. You can email them and give them your experience and they will let you know. They will be looking for experience in navigation and coastal cruising to let you go on your own. Something to keep in mind is if you want to go to Jost and party then you may still want a captain to keep you out of trouble.

Basically if your credit card clears you're good. I'm being a bit facaetious but I have a few friends who have worked in the biz and it's basically true.

Personally, I would make sure that you've got someone familiar with the islands and waterways down there if you're captaining yourself.

I think Ocean Runner keeps a propeller that is twisted beyond recognition on diplay as a warning. If you don't know what you're doing then spring for the extra $100 and let someone else do the driving. And yeah, the renter of the twisted propeller had to pay for a new one!
*Another fine scatterbrained production

My friends and I may have purchased that propeller. When in College a bunch of us staying at Cinnamon Bay rented one of the power boats with a couple we met from England (The guy had benn in the English Navy and they helped someone sail their yacht from New England to St John) We went over to Jost and had one of the best days I can ever remember having in my life. When it was time to go back to STJ the couple had informed us that since we were headed back to NY the next day they were going to hook up with a couple that we met and tool around the BVI's for a few days. This left us to get back to STJ with a one of our friends as the captain. He had been sailing a lot with his Dad when he was younger but nothing like manuevering around down there on what was now becoming a stormy afternoon. Unfortunately, he did not see the marker for the reef which we ended up sitting upon (broke my heart). The guys had to jump out and pull us off the reef. The propeller was pretty well chewed up. We managed to safely get back but it was pretty scary. Be sure to know the waters and the markers or hire a captain. It will be safer for you and the sea life. Happy Boating!
