Must Have Villa Music CD?

I like my Bob Marley "Legend" several Dave Matthews Band cds and The Radiators "Law of The Fish" and "Zigzagging Through Ghostland". Pretty much anything from the Radiators sounds great on the deck of your villa with a pain killer in hand

Law of the Fish? Killer, that is the only Radiators CD we have. Good stuff, I'll put it on my list.

You definitely can't go wrong with "Law of the Fish" that was the first cd I ever heard by them and was hooked

Besides the usual suspects already mentioned like Marley, Buffett, and local heros Quito and Inner Visons, these feel good tunes (some old, some new I got turned onto by Sirius radio - worth sampling for possible download on iTunes or similar) worked well in my islands playlist:

While I sincerely believe that the Rising is one of the most underrated CDs of all time, it is not on my list to take to STJ.
And this is a topic that we have always taken seriously as our first trips were before satellite, cable, even many local stations. It was not uncommon for houses, they weren't called villas yet, to have TVs. You could get bad reception on a couple stations in English, or bad reception on a couple stations in Spanish. But radio was much more diverse and better.
Nonetheless I remember taking casettes and player to the islands with early Marley, Gregory Issac(sp?),Pink Floyd, Gordon Lightfoot, and Chick Corea and maybe Springsteen's Greetings from Asbury Park. Cruz Bay always had a place to buy local or recent reggae or island music, mostly pirated on casette.
Lately we include the following:Inner Visions, Puntamayo Calypso and Reggae, Marley Legends, Kiya; Chesney Be As You Are; Buffett License to Chill, the B quad set Beaches, Boats, Bars, Ballads (or is it Bimbos?), Don't Stop the Parade, Beachhouse on the Moon; and for some perverse reason Going South, the TV version.
CDs allow for much more music and we actually spend a good amount of time picking each year's selection.

MLS - agree about The Rising. Also Bruce in general probably doesnt work for me either in d'ilons even though I'm a huge fan. Only brought it up because I have this knee jerk response to bash the Grammys whenever I hear Norah Jones music or name (no offense patr - whatever floats your boat). Even more amazing that he made a record like the Rising 20+ years after Born to Run, which by the way, has one of the Top 5 lines in rock history in Jungleland "barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge drinking warm beer in a soft summer rain..."

Regarding "Greetings from Asbury Park", I downloaded this a few weeks ago after being without it for ten years or so and was almost crying the first time I listened to it all the way through.
This is a fun topic....I've discovered some cool new music and those itunes people love me even more now.

jmq - a bruce fan among us? we had BTR blasting by the pool at Bongo Bongo! Agree it is not the first thing you think of in the Caribbean but it's never a mistake to listen to Bruce

I have to say that I have never considered myself a huge Bruce fan. Liked his music if I heard it but that was about it.

He closed out the first weekend of Jazz Fest and it was an AMAZING experience for EVERYONE there. The only reason I caught his act over The Meters Reunion was because of rumors that Bono might show up - after all The Edge had showed up with The Dave Matthews Band the night before. Anyway, from his first song, he had everyone on their feet singing along with songs we had never heard before. He played songs off of his new album. Granted, it is not his normal music, but it did something for all of us that we needed so badly. The emotion he and the Seeger Sessions Band put into their performance was amazing. The emotion that came from the crowd was overwhelming. We were all soooo happy to be there and to have a chance to escape everything we were dealing with. All I can say it is the kinda medicine we needed at the time.

I have the cd of that album and occasionally listen to it and am reminded of that particular day at Jazz Fest where we all came together to be entertained by someone who seemed to know what we needed.

I don't know why I am telling you all this except to maybe say that I am now a fan of Bruce

Don't think the cd I have of his is really the type of music I like to listen to when I am chillin' on the villa deck though. Will still stick to my Radiators, Marley, DMB, Buffett and thanks to jmq's recommendation, Jack Johnson.

nothintolose - cool that another Jack Johnson fan has been created. My list also mentions the Subdudes - arent they a New Orleans area band? If so, I would like to hear of similar artists...

Re Bruce...well now you know why folks like Mary Beth have seen him 88 times (!) and records like this are set in his home state (this was for The Rising tour):

Fans of the musician snapped up tickets to seven July shows in Giants Stadium, the first time in Ticketmaster history that a performer had sold tickets for seven stadium dates in a single day.

Ticket demand for three announced shows on July 15, 17 and 18 was so extraordinary that two more dates were added on July 21 and 24. When the press for tickets continued, two more shows -- July 26 and 27 -- were tacked on, said officials at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. More than 300,000 tickets were expected to eventually trade hands for the Springsteen extravaganza.

JC - thats a great playlist for limin'. Would like to see the other playlists you mention. Southern Cross by CSN is also on mine and should be on everybodys. Stuff like Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James & the Shondels is an insired choice. I might even sprinkle in more early British Invasion stuff from the likes of The Searchers, Hermans Hermits, and The Kinks (Waterloo Sunset or Sunny Afternoon anyone?)
